Braided brake lines

I'm just looking for some clarification, I'm in the process of refurbing my rear beam and need to replace a few bits.

One of these is the rear brake lines and the short flexis, can these be done away with altogether and just run new braided lines from the caliper right up to the rigid lines at the headlight adjuster?

That’s what I’m doing, both lines measure and details sent to be made. I just need to confirm colour and pay.

@RustyMojo I worked the long line out at 1750mm and the short at 910mm if doing away with the flexis, is that what you worked out?

I had 1450mm for the OS line and 620mm for NS I’m using BRT motorsport think he said £75. I need to confirm it all but haven’t gotten round to it yet..now I’m worried about my measurements. I measured each section of the hose bend by bend if that makes sense.

I used a piece of spring, right from caliper tontge end of the flexible hose

Still 300 difference, which worries me. My lines are removed from the car I measured them as per the below picture

Just to throw a third set of numbers into the mix I've got 1660 and 700mm on order haha.

I think we're all on the same page. Looks like @RustyMojo has just measured the hardline and hasn't accounted for the 200mm or so for the flexi between the beam and body perhaps?

I used a bit of string and of course some people measure to end of the fitting or the end of the hose, assume different bend radii etc, use slightly different routing around or over the standard spring mount etc.

That’s right i hadn’t, but only because I believe they couldn’t be 1 piece so was ordering them separately. From same supplier. So in essence what I’m ordering is the hard lines that run from callipers to the original flexi Hoses, then the two original flexi hoses also. If that makes sense? Principle being everything remains the same, just the factory hardlines are being replaced with braided lines.

Are you planning one just running one continual piece from Caliper to chassis?

I dont see why there is any need to retain the original flexible hoses, just one more join to seize/leak in the future.

I'm confused why we all have such varying lengths though.

@Steven103 where were you getting them from and what price if you dont mind me asking?

I have these but yet to fit.

The longest one is about 1350mm I'd say. That will be to the flexi join at the beam connection.

I was dubious about using Proline after reading the Mitch thing however at that price worth a go.

My ones were from when Mitch was running it. They came really quick 😂

This is someone else running it now apparently.

Don't forget you'll still retain the flexi join with these...

I also avoided Proline because of the poor feedback previously. Call me cynical but for all I know the company could've been "sold" to a family member and I wasn't going to waste time playing PI.

@DomP182 I used HEL as I needed a few bespoke items. The online configurator has absolutely loads of options, gives you an instant price and avoids any risk of miscommunication. Queries and special requests not on the website were answered same day unlike some other places I tried. At the time they also had a very attractive discount code.

I've gone for one piece from the body hardline to the caliper. Hardline already has a swivel end, but went for a swivel end on the caliper too to make fitting/removal easy and a curved 90 degree fitting to keep line routing neat. Will see what it's like when it arrives.

we could do single lines doing away with small Flexi for £60 delivered

Always wanted my lengths to be safe rather than sorry, but if I was doing it again I'd go for perhaps 1500mm and 650mm.

Surely that isnt the length if doing away with the standard short flexible lines

Yep. Goes the “long” way round the standard spring location too. I think I read somewhere that HEL exclude the fitting from their lengths, but still that’s only 20mm each end.

Measured including the fittings, either to the ends or to the centres if it's a banjo style fitting 👍🏻

Definitely 1660mm. Definitely would fit be a neater fit if it were shorter. Just cable tied roughly in place for now.

Very generous with clearance around the RR spring pan.

Let it sag down over the rear of the beam to use up some slack.
IMG_5557.JPG

Let some of the slack push it a bit close to the left rear spring pan.
IMG_5560.JPG

Even so it still overshoots and overlaps the left rear line.

Didn't measure the left rear but it too takes on a bit more of an "s" shape than I'd have liked. Goes straight onto the body, got rid of those little flexis.

Beams looking good! I've been playing on the HEL brake line configurator, what fittings did you use at either end? Male 90° swivel but which female? Finally what lengths would you go with now you've got these?

  172
Fixed female M10x1, think it's at the bottom of the list. The male union on the hardline already rotates so no need for extra complexity.

Your judgement is as good as mine! Maybe 1500 & 600mm would fit like a glove nice & tight to the beam? But too short would be a disaster, 1550 & 650 would still be tidier than mine. Bear in mind I've removed the bracket on the beam that holds the standard short flexi so might be using slightly different routing that what you plan on.

Big fan of white/silver as it's the easiest colour to spot damage/cracks in. Particularly interested to see how it drives as I went to the effort of buying different spacers left/right to make camber/toe as symmetrical as possible.

  172
Putting a swivel on a swivel?! Why not do it up with an adjustable spanner too

In all seriousness, I can see a female swivel making life easier if your 15/20 year old union happens to be absolutely completely stuck and you’ve already done the calliper end up.
