Clio 172 sleeper project

  Audi A3
Evening all,

Picked up my 53 plate 172 today. And so my project begins.

What had initially started as a track project in my mind has turned into a sleeper project. Mainly as i saw this on Ebay. Looks great, drives great, just a little lacking in paperwork. Plenty of reciepts for parts that the previous owner has used himself to service.

Reason for now wanting a sleeper, is finding a car that was in such a good condition. 53 plate, 80k on the clock. Just stunning. I couldnt walk away from it.

So inital plan, due to not having a lot of paper work; going in for a full service, check up and a few extras added on. Spoke to John at demon tweeks, so i am currently awaiting a new clutch, ebc grooved and vented discs with green stuff pads all round, braided brake hoses and coilovers. Engine will come out for a full service, doing all the belts whilst its there and fitting the clutch. Then add all the extra bits on after. Should be done within 4 to 6 weeks I'm hoping. Will try and still do a track day in it too.

Longer term plans; bit of a restoration on the inside. Seats could do with a touch up, the thumb grips have pretty much gone on the steering wheel. Little things like that i can do over time.

The main bit will be the engine. I am eventully planning on having a fully forged turbo in her. Hence my sleeper idea. That may take a bit of time. Few overtime shifts here and there too!! But by the end of it, im hoping to have myself a car that is even more wonderul to drive than she currently is!!

Oh, and powder coat the alloys white... I just think that would look a little better!! Ive attached some photos.

I hope everyone is having a good weekend. Keep safe guys and girls

Chris

What made you go for ebc discs and pads? They're not a popular choice for 1*2s. I had them on a Pug 306 S16 back in the 90s and the discs warped like f**k. Having said that, the pads seemed ok with very little brake dust.

Mr Billy - I had ebc on my old 306 track car, and never had an issue with them. Stopped me quick enough in the past, so thought i would get them for this. What do people normally recommend?

James, never considered silver. Might not be a bad shout, but part of me has always wanted a blue car with white wheels!! 🤣

Louis, thats the plan at the moment. As i said, that will be a save for the future moment, i guess at the time i can see what is available. If an engine swap makes the most sense, i may do that

A Clio 172/182 is never gonna be a sleeper car.. They are known as a hot hatch so im afraid your not going to pull the wool over anyones eyes.. In fact it attracts attention to the eyes of boyracers that want to race you.. [emoji2357]

If its running 300bhp+ I'd call it a sleeper. It's a clio which people know arent massively fast in a straight line

A sleeper car to me is something that looks ordinary like for example.. A rep mobile Audi A6 but with an RS6 engine in it.. A Clio hot hatch will never be taken as a sleeper car..

I'll agree to disagree with you here

FFS, don't put white wheels on it. Monaco looks best on standard silver

Cookson, noted. That does look pretty good to be fair!! Taking her to my nates garage for a quick once over today. Make sure there are no other bits to be sorted. Hopefully all goes well!!

The majority of people run standard Renault or Brembo discs . As for pad choice that's a whole can of worms dependant on what you use the car for.
@George@RTR_Parts is one of the go to guys for people's braking needs.

Cheers Billy. And thanks for the welcome George. Im gonna try the EBC. As 8 said, have used them before, granted in a different car, bit ill give then a go with this. If i do have issues etc, ill be straight to you George. Any advise on polybush for engine and gearbox would be useful. Tried looking and i cant make sense of a lot. Not a massive car man. I am trying to learn!!

Thanks again guys. Its nice to find a forum where people are willing to help and advise.
