Engine Dynamics - Experiences?

Hi all,

I am in the final stages of committing to an Engine Dynamics ( based in Colchester) Level 2 engine rebuild will cost in the region of £3.5K, so not an inconsiderable amount.

They have been pretty responsive to my emails which bodes well but does anyone have experience of dealing with these guys?

I wish I was closer but I'm up in "North Yorkshire but I don't think visits to Colchester in relation to an engine build would constitute an essential trip (apart from fellow ClioSport members!)

I have thought about building it myself but I've never done an engine before and this will be for competition use only and you only need to mess up slightly to potentially ruin a few £k's worth of parts so this is not an option. I can justify the cost in part with the money I saved on fitting my own kitchen!!

Thanks

I had Engine Dynamics do the remap on my engine after the rebuild. I'm eight months on and it's not missed a beat.

I'd personally recommend them - especially with them being very familiar with Clios.

edit - And distance is irrelevant should quality of service ring true. I'm north of Manchester - so probably not too dissimilar to your North Yorkshire journey!

Watching with interest as i'm also up in North Yorkshire and have been looking at getting their entry level rebuild for my daily 182. Heard only good things. Such a shame we don't have something like this up North.

I doubt you would get away with it if you were stopped. If it was your only daily transport then maybe.

I think they are just up the road from me. Never been there yet so I would be interested in hearing what they are like too

Just remembered that AMAC Engineering in Northallerton did some work on my mates Clio 182 engine. He races in the Trackday Trophy and was impressed with his work. Car ran great all last season, so might be worth reaching out to him?

Both Engine Dynamics and AW Motorworks seem to be highly recommended. I had AW do my Cambelt change and fit Catcams at the Same time. He took it to ED for mapping as he used to work at ED.. All work was done well on schedule and at quoted cost very friendly very helpful and I'd use them again. Car made a impressive 192 odd bhp . In fact soon as I can get my inlets sorted or find a rs2 I'll be going back to have 197 injectors fitted and the map tweaked

Setups like that work really well. I know his name is mud to some, but Carl Wadeson aka @bloke did my Group N timing on my 182 track car before it went off to EFi for mapping. Carl booked everything in advance, so it worked out very well for me.

Heard good things about Carl. I'm in Kent so aw and ed were local for me.

Only been to ED for a base dyno run before i start playing with some mods on mine. Andy was very helpful and informative and happy to talk about the more technical aspects of Clio tuning. I assume if Andy builds the motor then he will also be mapping it?
This is a huge positive if its all done under one roof, as in the unlikely event of an issue, the mapper cannot blame the engine builder and vice versa etc.

engine dynamics built my engine in 2016 after a ringland failed, they also mapped it. haven't had any trouble with it and was kept up to date with what was going on

Had a remap there couple years back- very helpful, told me a couple issues (One being LAMBDA sensor only working occasionally- needs pre heat or something) and mapped it great

Now running 179.8 BHP :)

They mapped my track car after it had 421 cams and 197 injectors fitted, had no issues and no aftermarket management needed either. Wouldn’t hesitate to use them or indeed AW again as both are local(ish).

hi tony , what series do you race in?
do you do your own spanner work on your car? as rebuilding these engines isnt as hard as you think if you are mechanicaly minded.
i race in the tricolore trophy with the track attack race club and do all my own work (except mapping as thats whichcraft) .once you have done one the rest are easy.

Hi,

I compete in Harewood hillclimb Championship which is nice and local to me. I do all my own spanner work though NorthCupLoop rebuilt my gearbox with a Gripper diff.

My concern is that I do not have a huge amount of time and if I have a £1,000 plus worth of parts in the build and I screw up I probably lose the lot.

thats fair enough, have you done any engine work before, cambelt change, head gasket .
there is plenty of info out there about rebuilding them and if you follow the manuals tightening tensions then you cant go far wrong.
the engine i used this year was supposed to have been built by proffesionals but i ended up having to do alot of work on it as it hadnt been done right and when i stripped it this xmas to get it ready for next season i found they had put the pistons in the wrong way round. still made 241bhp and got me on the podium.

have you not thought about joining us and do some proper racing.lol.
anyway good luck which ever way you go and if you need any help just drop me a pm.
cheers rob

I went to ED for full exhaust system, panel filter and remap and was happy with the service, although I will say my car felt absolutely no quicker afterwards! Clio 182.

They mapped and built my engine, same level 2 one as you're looking at.

that was 3 years ago and im sure the cars still about with 360+ bhp running fine

  Many.
Andy’s builds are second to none, not going to lie, that’s where my main engine building experience came from, you can’t beat a company that only builds one brand of engine, hence why I’ve carried on with the same.
Are you looking for a drive in, drive out package or pallet an engine to/from?
If I can be of help, fire me a message.

Alex, Thanks for your kind offer. Andy has been very responsive answering all my questions. It will be a pallet job, just got to find a company who I can trust to deliver it in one piece.

I’ve never used engine dynamics for work on a car, but have bought lots of parts. Always helpful and when he didn’t have supertec exhaust valves in stock after ordering, instead of refunding he offered me the next level up valves which were £90 more, but offered we went halves so I only paid £45.

@T9 0LLE had their low boost kit fitted to his 172 and ran it a couple of years with no issues. Have a read of his build thread. https://cliosport.net/threads/my-monaco-story.802873/
This is correct I went for a map, faultless communication throughout and was back 6months later for a full turbo kit fitted, again faultless throughout. The car ran fine with me for 2 years and is still about. I’m now dealing with Alex at AWMotorworks who is going the next step and will be building me a forged turbo engine, Can’t recommend either Engine Dynamics or AWMotorworks company enough to people.

they seem good on replying and that. i bought parts for my mk4 and looking at their hybrid turbo for it would go to him for a map once fitted but due to distance might not be viable as would have to fit turbo to drive to them but will see what they say when i go to buy the turbo.

Hi Everyone.

Finally after just over twelve months from my initial post I have an update!!

After all the positive feedback I went to Andy at Engine Dynamics and went with Level Engine 2 rebuild which consisted of forged pistons, 421 cams, cleaned up head, one piece vales and I added a lightened flywheel, (I took just the engine not the car - 500 mile round trip). I also fitted Jenvey throttle bodies on a Gen 90 ecu (K-Tec kit). I ran the engine in and then took it to a local expert to map, but it needed bigger injectors so full power was not realised. Took it back and with Megane injectors it made 204.5bhp which I was disappointed with, but happy with how strong the engine felt.

I contacted Andy who was very helpful and was prepared for me to take the car down to him but unfortunately he has little experience of Gen 90 ecu's so was not well placed to extract the best out of it but agreed the power was down and this should be a close to 215-220bhp engine, so I decided just to run the car for the season (hillclimbing) then have a re-think.

Having campaigned the car through last season and after dialogue with Mark @Northcuploop (who had previously done a great job of fitting a gripper diff) and was very helpful, I contacted Chris at EFIPARTS and booked my Clio in for a session.

Yesterday Chris ran the engine up and initially achieved 206 BHP, so fraction up on last number by 1.5bhp which Chris attributed to the engine now fully run in after a season and running Esso 99 octane fuel (up from 98 Shell).
Chris then spent a solid two hours re-mapping my Clio and the final result was 220.6bhp and 175.6 ft/lb torque... to say I'm pleased is an understatement!!!

So a great result and lesson learnt......Andy builds great engines, but you must also take it to someone with the knowledge of your ECU who will put in the time and effort to get the best out of it.

In summary I would have no hesitation in recommending both Andy and Chris if you want a great well built engine and want the best out of it!

Now looking forward to this season albeit with one less excuse for not going faster!

My rather nice sounding Clio (IMHO) here; . around 1hr 52 minutes in
My best is a 66.42.
