'92 Clio Mk1 16v updates

Think its worth me making a progress thread for this as I will no doubt be adding and changing things over time

I lost a lot of the original photos of when I had it so will kinda do it as a progress thread from now onwards but will chuck some old pics in as I find them

So basically the car is an early '92 clio mk1 1.8 16v

2 previous owner, me being its 3rd owner

Currently on a touch over 89k miles

All original stickers/keys etc

Original dealer plates

Iv restored this to pretty much standard which included ALOT of welding and a full respray. Aswel as spending a fortune on genuine Renault bits and some bargain New old stock through ebay

I have added some bolt on ''upgrades'' just to make it my own. Can easily be changed out whenever I want it to be completely standard

Upgrades include

Williams Manifold and straight through sportex exhaust, no cat/silencers ( '92 so pre cat car  )

30mm lowering springs on genuine renault standard shocks with beam lowered to match

Polybushed everywhere

Non standard tyre profile

Other than that its pretty much original

So heres some pics I have, heres when I originally picked it up, rusty arches/sills BADLY pitted turbines

Loads to be done to this over time.
I really need to sort the engine bay out as I haven't touched inside there other than to service/upgrade bits.

Also I'm desperate to whip the rear beam off and give it a good tidy up.

Few interior bits need finishing on it too

Will keep updates from now on in this thread as a record for myself if not for any other reason

The ONLY modification I would do to this is wide track it at the front.

So I kinda forgot about this thread really and haven't really done an awful lot with the car other than use it for the odd meet etc

Iv never really payed any attention to the engine bay of the car as it just worked when I got It but its now time for me to get it looking as close to how it did from factory as I can

Couple of small issues I do have currently are that it can be very difficult to find gears at low speeds sometimes especially when on a hill so this needs investigating. I have a PAS hose that basically sits on the Exhaust manifold too so I need to do something with that also

I don't really have many pics worth of putting up just yet so il just add a few and then will be logging pictures as I refit parts 😊

Things I have done so far other than explode most of the parts down are re wraping the whole loom as it let the bay down

Before

After

I currently have all the Ali brackets/inlet off for vapour blasting and plan to refut them bare as that's how I believe they came from factory

Rocker cover is being powdercoated in bright silver

Every pipe/bracket is being blasted and zinc primered/powdercoated black

And I'm having the subframe redone in the original grey colour also

So that's where I am at the moment. I'm awaiting parts to arrive and the painted parts to be finished so will update as I go 🙂

Thanks for reading

No I’m east midlands. There will be companies local to me but always good to use companies who does a good job and actually doesn’t mind someone wanting some old car parts powder coating or zinced.

96 phase 2. 3 or 4 owners for me too. Some max power body work going on on mine though which would have been to my taste back when, well when I used to read max power😂 not now though!

I can’t tell in your pics, is yours the straight black or the metallic black? She looks great.👍

Ah fair enough, I was actually thinking to start a thread on here for recommended powder coaters actually as I had to do a bit of searching to find the one I used, they were really good actually as they liked cars themselves

It's Metallic 676 mate so standard colour 🙂

'96 must be one of the later ones made then

So does it have that glitter to it in the sunlight? I’m trying to find out if mine is an original colour and the code.

Yes I read mk1 phase 2 was Jan 96 on. 110k full history and all its books but only one key.

I haven’t seen your wishbones in your pics, have you blast and coated them and having new bushes pressed in or are them ones off eBay any good where you get a pair with bushes and ball joints all attached for £45?

I purchased cheap wishbones 5 years ago off ebay, one of them turned out to be incorrect though after having a driveshaft explode so definitely need to be careful when ordering. Make sure they match the ones you take off. I haven't bothered repainting them as they are half tidy still

Yes mate colour has a good bit of metallic in the sun, as far as im aware they are all metallic black, just look flat due to age. I have the brochures here and there's only metallic black listed.

Nice to have full history with it mate 🙂

Pretty close to completing this now, all fluids topped up, got a few leaks where some of the coolant hose clamps iv used aren't quite tight enough. But so far so good for all other fluids. Seems to be turning over ok too so hoping to have it back on the road end of next week with any luck 🙂

The steering has always been attrocious on my 16v, so decided to take a look at this stupid bush on the steering column. They tend to wear on the mk1 clios. Turns out mine must have been repaired in the past with a nut and bolt which has done sod all to help with the play. Column removed from the car as I didn't want to burn holes in the carpet.

Welded and refitted now the car feels 1000 times better than it did. Should have fixed this any time in the past 6 years of ownership 😂
