First Car Project - Clio 172 PH1

Hi,

Ive just picked up my first car, a 172 ph1 from @James.

I know that buying this as my first car sounds like a stupid idea but unlike most 17 year olds, I understand that a car like this with what'll be little driving experience would mean that it would be in a ditch. I don't plan on driving it like a lunatic at all, definitely not for awhile after I get my license. Also, I'm not going to put any hideous mods on it like most 17 years old do to their cars. These look good how they are, maybe a few tasteful mods down the line but that's about it. As a bonus, the insurance isn't too bad either especially compared to more modern cars.

Anyways, the car is a 56k Iceberg silver 172. It's not been driven for a good 8 years so is in need of a little bit of TLC and a timing belt before I can get it going again. It's got a few marks here and there but id rather have a car like that especially for my first.

First job is to fit the front bumper then it'll go to my work so I can do the timing belt.

Humongous thanks to the previous owner, James. For keeping the car around while I gathered my pennies and for putting all the bits back on it for me collecting it. Possibly another RS for you after this one? Your more than welcome to come and have a go in it once ive got it going again.

What an exceptional first car dude! Hope you enjoy it and have a smooth time fixing it up.

The people on here are lovely, so you should be in good hands if you've got any questions or need advice. :)

Thanks, I can't wait to get started on it.

Hopefully, it doesn't give me any headaches especially with its 20+ year old French electrics.

Sorry @James i tagged the wrong James. He hasn’t been active since 2013 so atleast he won’t be confused.

What I would of given to of had a 172 as my first car!

Hope you enjoy it mate, and I know you'll bring it back to it's former glory!

Please document it all on here as it'll be good to see the journey

I’m already dying to get the belts done on it and get it going again.

I’m going to do some of the little jobs tomorrow while I’ve got a helping hand from one of my mates.

How much is insurance now that it's basically a classic?

When they were younger a 17 year old would have to pay at least 1 kidney!
At most I’ve been quoted £3000 a year without a black box. On average it’s around £2500 from what I’ve got. Most of the 90s cars are like that. They are not too bad at all and a 1.2 is much cheaper but I wanted a car I’d like to keep so I got the RS.

Despite having a 2l under the bonnet, the insurance mainly goes off how many people have them. So a Mk7 Fiesta, a Mk4 Clio etc is more expensive as most 17 yr olds have them so are more prone to crash them.
