Track Car......Suggestions

  www.renparts.co.uk
Hiya chaps..
Bought this valver off a friend. Intentions are to use it as a track day car. The car is never intended to be road legal, nor do i want to increase the power as im sure i can have some fun with the engine stock.

At the moment im helping a mate (forum user on here) mikeydee who competes in 750 motor club stock hatch championship and have been offered a place on the trailer when his dad takes his stock 106 rallye down to track days so i have no problems transporting it. Just wondered on what people suggested i do. the following list are things i think it needs to be ready for a decent track day weapon... as i said before it will purely be a track toy no road use. Currently the car is stock except lowered 60mm on springs and shocks and has black turbines.. I have also took the back seats, carpets and door cards out. Please bear in mind im on a slight budget

1. New tyres (looking for suggestions on brands/type)
2. New Pads Ferodo ds2500's
3. Have the steering rack welded as is got the usual fault the valvers have
4. 2 new lower arms with new bushings already pressed into them
5. remove front carpets, door cards and headlining to complete the stripping
6. Roll cage (probably a bolt in one as i feel its adequate on my finances)
7. Pair of harnesses (probably sparco or any branded ones)
8. Cold air feed from n/s fog light as its a cheap mod and feel the airbox will get a bit heat soaked when its getting thrashed.

Just looking for you experienced track day people to suggest anything else
thanks
josh

Personally I'd get it road legal its easy to test the car then. Also not reliant on lifts on a trailer etc and you can get up and drive staright to track days full blast no speed limits/trouble towing a car early morning.

Airbox heat soak isn't an issue. but on the cheap not a bad idea.

I'd think more importantly check the brakes clean/replace/rebuilt the calipers I'd personally go to drums at the back if the rear calipers have any trouble.
Remove all the weight your willing to live with personally I'm not sure i can live with any stripping out for noise but a proper stripping of the car will make for a much quicker track car and I mean everything plus battery in the back to optimise weight ballance.

Get a decinet cage and get the harness attached to that.

Chnage all the fluid filters ca,belt etc assuming your not 1005 sure.

Have a look at possibly manual rack if the PAS is worn save weight more Hp less problems.

As for tyres use anyhting you like I like stock compound tyres ie continentials other like F1's Slicks etc can wait till you'r happy with the car on the limit as snap can occure quicker there less play plus your going quicker.

Ive got a private area to test the car belongs to scottish power and has some great corners.. used to be used as part of a local rally stage but is smooth tarmac. and with regards to the trailer etc its no problem as my mates dad will want the race van down there anyway so no trouble with using the trailer.

Plan is to strip basically everything. What do you recommend i put in the footlwells? Noise isn't an issue as the car isn't used except on the track days...

I was thinking about a manual rack. Is this possible or will i need to replace the part on the auxilary belt with an extra pulley where it has been removed?

Manual racks a bit of work either adjust the aux belt route by moving bits or use a pully in the place its only worthwhile if the PAS system has any problem as its just as cheap as a new rack which might be as many problems.

If you can live with it strip it compley nothing in the footwells no dash top of bottom cut out all unnesssessary wires to do a proper job you'd take engine out so you can pull ever last extra wire out I recon there a fair few kg of unused connectors in there. Mark At Richspeed used to rally his car and reconed there was 30 or so KG of extra wiring in the looms which could be removed. Looks for any Pics from Notorious he stipped his last car fully cut ecess material from the doors if your going for a cage you cna remove the strenghting fron the doors as well. Electric wndows dump d to plastic ones remove central locking alarm etc.remove jack all clips etc (they'll all ad up to a good few KG when you look at it). Washer wiper and pipes going to the front of the car also rear windscreen pump and wiring, arial cable. Roof lining. WIng mirror covers electric wing mirro wiring (no point once there in place they stay in place only worthwile if more than one driver even then the other driver can adjust them. Remove all side strip cover holes with duck tape.

Most importantly get some decinet suspension IMO even if its just new dampers

No fog lights for a starter plus wiring plus relays and fuses. Thats probaly nearly .75kg which % wise is isn't much but do that to 10 things and your looking at an extra 1.3hp plus faster in the bends and less in the way when your trying to fix the car.

remove the sun roof and fogs. Take all glass out and replace with plastic. Find some lightweight wheels and a seat.

josh my dad says you might be better off.... what alot of people do in stock hatch is buy the OMP bolt in roll cages and weld them in to the front suspension mounts and B pilars to give the shell more rigidity. Bare in mind on track days they dont really let you "race" as such so with abit of luck you wont need that roll cage to save your life. It will purely help the handling of the car.

fully strip it, fit williams wide track and a williams engine!!!

Pointless. like i said im keeping the power stock... No point in putting a new engine in until something major happens to this one.. im on some form of budget remember. There is plenty of fun to have with the valver lump im concentrating on getting the handling up to scratch

F7P power is plenty fun for track days anyway. its quick, and the clio's are great cars for chucking about.

F7R is the way forward, but if your on a budget aint nowt wrong with the 1.8.
