Setting up online payment help

  172 cup TT
Hi all

I need to incorporate a credit card payment system on my website whereby people can buy my product via the site using maestro / visa etc.

What things do I need to get this up and running?..i havent a clue... Mainly the behind the scenes stuff.. i.e: do I need a secure server?.. What will HSBC (my bank) need to set up?.. Is it a lot of money to set up? i.e: do the credit card companies charge a fee for us to use the privilage…

Any hints, tips, advice really appreciated.

Thanks

i've just been through this, and basically unless u have been trading for at least a year you are quite restricted in what you can use.

easiest thing to use would be to set up a merchant account with paypal and then use their system which will allow you to accept credit cards, they take 3.4% per transaction, if you don't want to use paypal then 2CO (2 checkout) are another option, and they take 5.5% plus a fixed amount.

are you going to have a shopping cart type thing, or will it just be set items with a button to buy it on a website?

hi mate - great info...

Erm, it will be set items really... MAY change in the future... but at the moment its just one set product and thats it.. so no need for a basket thingie really

We have been a ltd company for over a year and just about to start taking money... do you mean a year of "trading / actually taking money" or if the business has beeen set up for over a year but not taken money?

Why not phone a few companies and find out from them usually there are set up fees and then transaction fees iirc a 12 month contract with monthly fee of approx £20 and then around 2% of each transaction Usually have to have been trading a year before they allow it to

  A blue one.
As adam said....

Forget using a merchant account, you'll get hit for at least 5% per transaction with all the robbing b******s taking their cut along the way.
