Tiscali and throttling.

  172
So Tiscali have a policy of throttling high users between 18:00 and 23:00, but as I'm new I won't be seen as a high user. Yet I still can't get decent speeds when downloading from Easynews. Highest I had was 110KB/s avg is around 40KB/s. I'm getting roughly the same connection speed as I was on Bulldog, but yet I could achieve on avg speeds of 500-600 KB/s from Easynews.

Anyone got any ideas if they're resticting newsgroup speeds or any ideas on how to improve the speed?

TIscali are just tight on there speeds. I am with them, and I often get bad speeds. Mostly I get better speeds during the night than the day, which is understandable, but I mostly get pretty bad speeds with them. I dont use newsgroups though so I cant comment on that sorry.

And I upgraded to a 2mb package from a 1mb, and im seeing no difference in speeds at all, I dont think they have upgraded it yet, even though I ordered about 2 months ago. I would phone them but its such a waste of money, and you just get to speak to someone in india. (no affence meant by that to anyone)

Thats not too bad I dont think, they I havent spoke to many people on "upto 8mb" packages that acctually achive anywhere near the full 8mb speed. Depends on the phoneline I think, 2mb is the highest I can get here :( otherwise I would be on more. Always looking for more speed

Even if you live opposite the exhange you won't get over 6.5-7Mb

The point is though my line is capable of downloading at 300-400Kb/s as I can acheive those speeds from MS etc. It's just absolutely crap on Easynews, even though I'm using a download manager. My setup hasn't changed since I was with Bulldog, so there's nothing wrong there, it's just Tiscali seems to be capping the speed.

I'm on 8Mb with tiscali, connect at 7.8Mb everytime and seem to get an avarage download of 6.8/7.0Mb with them.. Although I must admit, I'm only about 1200 yards away from the village telephone exchange.

Some modems throttle to lower speeds too iirc.. Although I could be wrong on that.

I'm on an ADSL2 Wireless router. Can't see that limiting my speed. And plus it's not a speed issue as such it's a newsgroup issue. Maybe it's nothing to do with Tiscali and I keep getting on shitty Easynews servers. I'll have to have a play.

I'm currently d/ling at 250KB/s so not too bad.

Edit: Any rooms for rent in your house? lol.

I have Easynews and a Giganews account. I find Easynews isn't very fast to be honest. Try changing your route in the route selector to see if you can get better. You can also try other ports other than the default. Giganews on the other hand gives me a full 10 meg everytime.

2.5Mb aint bad, some people never see that at all and you NEVER get full speed anyway, I'm just very lucky plus I had my telephone line re-installed not so long ago so I've new cable from the exchange all the way down to the box in my kitchen :approve:, I've got a friend thats paying for 16Mb and never see's anything over 6! :S
Told him to just get 8Mb instead but he not interested, his loss! pmsl

You wouldn't want to live here... I live in a village with steep hills all round that eat clutches on peoples cars for the fun of it. :(

the maximum download rate possible on an upto 8mb service is 7150kbps (893kb/s) before taking away overheads. that works out to 6774kbps after atm overheads. this assumes an 8128k sync rate.

Easynews was always fine for me on Bulldog, 500-600 avg was the most my line could sustain anyway, so I was maxing out my line. I did try changing the route twice the other day but didn't see much change. I'll try them all see if I can get a better one.

I'm not expecting 8Mb, but I my bandwidth tests show that I'm connected at over 3Mb and therefore should expect over 400KB/s downloads. I can get those speeds from my own servers and any other high speed servers (such as Microsoft) at any times, just not on Easynews, where in the past they've been able to max out my connection.

Atm I've got a 350KB/s download, but it's 2:30. So it looks like I'm only able to get good speeds at night, which is no good to me as the computer is in my bedroom and the fans aren't exactly quiet and the hard drive is a noisy b*****d, so I have to turn it off. On Bulldog I could get 500-600KB/s all day long, seems that I'm not going to be that lucky with Tiscali.

The annoying thing is, is that I'm not even on a high user list yet, so they shouldn't even be throttling me. I might have to get in touch with them to see what's going on.

Oh yeah, I'm on the Max user package with the weekend calls too, so that might be why I'm getting good download/upload speeds.

Get in touch, they might be able to help more than any of us on here.

im on the tiscali network thru pipex homecall, and i cant get over 20k/sec using torrents, its driving me insane and ive got another 11 months left, gutted!

Well from reading the Tiscali forums it seems that they employ 'Throttling' between 6pm and 11pm and 'Traffic Shaping' between 8am and 1am on P2P. This doesn't explain why it gets shaped on Newsgroups though as it's not P2P!

So basically, I have an 'upto 8mb unlimited' service, but only between the hours of 1am and 8am. Stuck with these b******s for 12 months now as well. I might just have to keep downloading gigabyte files from MS until they kick me off.

Bulldog had shite CS (especially when they took 9 weeks to tell me after I moved house that they wouldn't provide me with a service and then wouldn't give a reason as to why!), but bugger me it was consistently fast and reliable. I had heard some bad things about Tiscali, but you hear about bad things with every ISP and I though it was just to do with the 6pm to 11pm throttling, which I could live with.

I don't see why I should pay for an 'unlimited' service, that means I have to listen to my computer whirring away all night just to actually use that unlimited service.
