It's just you... :rasp: ;)

Quality pics mate, PMSL!!!

FWIW, it's just such a nicer engine compared to my 172 - it revs much freer, sounds a lot nicer at high revs. A lot of people go on about the vtec kick, but it's not that much of a kick IMO. I just end up using high revs more often because it sounds bloody brilliant lol.

VTEC is misunderstood.

It's not like 'Turbo Boost' lol. The VTEC system was designed to maintain fuel economy without comprising on performance.

lol @ the hammond one, that's new :D

yeah, cause i have driven both a std type-r and one fitted with DC sports system and de-cat and a AEM V2..and there wasnt anywhere near the 5k kick you get in a 172/182...it got noisier and that was about it???

I completely disagree!!!

I have previously owned a EP3 & DC5 & the VTEC changeover was ALOT more pronounced that the 182's 5K kick.

I daresay all cars will be different..

I just kind of revved it hard...and at around 6k..there was a hesitation..followed by alot of noise...and leaving me very disappointed

I am not being biased on the clio's behalf..as at the time I was planning to buy a type-r, but having owned a 172 cup..the kick as it changes profile is really quite prominent and such a buzz especially as it got up to nearly 20000 miles :)

The Honda K20/a is one of the best engines made. Together with the gearbox.

Its the choice of engine upgrade [and on the wishlist] of all Lotus owners.

I love it!

i think the 182's kick is harder and more noticeable to feel, but you hear the vtec kick alot more so this makes it alot more noticeable.

just my opinion from being in both of them.

been out with 4 typer s today, allthough they are all modiified - exhaust, ind kit, k pro

but saying that.. i think their vtec kicks in early as they have the k pro

is renaults system ie raising cam profile @ 5k not just like vtech but without making a big fuss over it?

Yes having a Kpro will lower the cam switch and reduce the 'surge' feeling from VTEC.

As chris says the K20A is Amazing. The B18/B16 was so raw and the v-tec kicked it it was like an explosion.

Exactly the same opinion, all these write ups you read about the v-tec kick. Drove my mates ctr (spoon cat back exhaust and some filter) and i was left underwhelmed. All noise. The 5k in my cup felt alots more agressive. I do like the ctr, but the change over is all hype imo.

geraboox is sweet mind.

I dissagree - I have both my CTR and my 172 sat outside..... so I can jump out of one and drive the other. I will bet every penny I have that my CTR has more of a surge on cam.

This doesnt however make the way it delivers its power any better - just more of an event. The smoother and more spread the power delivery the better. Hence the Kpro.

different strokes for different blokes eh? ;)

I drove my cup a after jumping out of the ctr, and it 'felt' better at 5k. Maybe i need another drive, as a CTR might be the CUPS replacement come summer. Speed wise i know they are same, but with CTR's being thirsty for oil, and being smoked out (*edit from the exhaust!!!!*) by one having a play the other day doesnt inspire confidence.

  Was a 197
never known so much disagreemnt over a............KICK

like already said it is designed for fuel economy and performance, the engine realigns itself so it can hit 9000 rpm, other manufacturers have tried this zetec ecotec to name a few, but never as good as vtec

and how many vtec honda's do u see broken down or on back of tow truck because of engine malfunction, not many i'd imagine

imho behind the veyron's engine, its the best manfactured engine out there

That means it hasnt been run in properly. I have had my CTR from new - when I first had it - it drank about 1 litre of oil within a thousand miles - since then it hasnt needed topping up between oil changes. Oh and no smoke from the exhaust either - you may be looking at a shagged CTR.

I have had it on a '05 plate and have had no problems with it at all! Id love to be a honda mechanic - sitting on my ass all day! lol

Totally agree ... the gearbox is by far the best out there for a car under £30k.

However my 172 track car will mince my CTR [I wonder what my CTR would be like totally stripped though ;)]

Agreed.

There just is no kick at at all in 182 / 172s.

The CTR kicks a bit, nothing to write home about.

DC5 kicks a lot more than the CTR :)

JUst for the record as well AEM V2 sucks, or rather sucks hot air :dead:

Agree too.

Maybe my 172 was a shitter but I honestly couldn't notice ANY kick in mine.

My CTR has a kick that you can notice, but it's nothing like aw big as I think a lot of people expect given the past vtec engines.

Not had any experience of a DC5 - not going to as I'm worried it'd put my CTR to shame :(

LOL at the AEM V2 - at least that one doesn't suck in water lol (or am I confusing the 2 versions?)

This is some funny s**t!

172's dont really kick. Yeah you feel something but a kick? Nah! Its more like a tap from a 80 year old lady..

I've driven a civic vti and i agree, they dont kick either. Just a load of noise.

BUT

then i've been in a teg and yes they do kick.

The DC5 DOES kick alot harder than the UKDM EP3's due to different cams.
It feels alot different.

AEM is a cheap induction kit for the EP3 for a reason. Save up & buy a Gruppe M. Worth every penny.

V-tech rules and as yet one of the only engines never to go wrong i think

ian

There has never been a failure on the VTEC cam changeover within the engine. The cam changeover works on oil pressure. The cam will not change over will too little pressure (low oil normally). It's that feature of the engine that has never failed.
