MOT failed - god damn it!

  172 MKII FF
Hi,

My MOT has failed on emissions and offside ball joint!!

The ball joint isn't a problem - i think the part is £60 for a 172 FF.

The emissions thing is a little worrying though.

The guy tried twice to get a correct lamba sensor reading and could get one; these are the 2 readings: 1.052, 1.032.

I've just had a K-Tec stealth fitted - could be causing problems?

I also had a service done a while back and the reading for that was 1.188. The MOT guy said you are allowed between 0.97 and 1.03 for lamba readings.

Could anyone help please?

Check the lambeda is actually working.

The exhauist system, can cause the problmes its ahppened before. seems to depend on the car.

Give it an italian tune up before you go though and some fuel cleaner stuff usualy helps.

Italian Tune Up - whats this?

Italian tune up = A good thrashing!

Old Fiats and Alfa's etc used to be designed to be revved and invariably carboned up after a while and started running rough. So dealers would take them out and rev the hell out of them until all the crud had been blown out the exhaust. Then they used to charge the customer for a 'tune-up'.

How does this help the lamber sensor?

It doesn't in theory it just sort of cleanes out he engine sometimes and get them warm so they should pass the MOT emmisions.

As said it was a Italian car type thing but it is often needed on many cars diesel particularly with many owners never driving them hard enough.

Yeah I had to do it on my Pug306DT and it worked.

I remember some mechanic telling me if that still doesn't work then changing the plugs can help too?

There no plugs ona diesel but yep on a petrol can sometimes help depends how bad they are.

lol. i want that job.

i have this job!! when they fail at work its always the first thing, petrol/diesel additive, then a nice warming!!! you want to see some of the diesels! i go down the bypass to a roundabout and then back throught the smoke trail! 3rd gear flat all the way, basically giving a petrol a good thrash gets the cat properly warm, they dont work unless there HOT, and it does help even though in theory it shouldnt!! As for them readings its only a dick hair from being in! so get some additive, thrash it, leave it running in the car park and ask nicely if he will check it again for you!

PS i advise doing the ball joint before all this thrashing! :rasp:

Cool.

I'm going to take it somewhere today and let them see if they can clean the sensors.

I've also noticed a completely different sound from before it went in for the MOT. It's a kind of chugging noise and it seemed to idle well below 1000 rpm - it always idled at 1000 before.

When you say petrol additive do you mean something like redex?

Took my car to an exhaust place and they had a quick look and say the new noise is the gasket between the manifold and cat has gone.

I only had a new bolt fitted last week! Apparently, it has probably blown when they revved the car in the MOT - car is going in on Monday to have this fixed.

Ball-joint is on order with Renault, apparently no dealership stocks them; this is being fitted next Sat.

With regards to the lamber sensors, I bought some cataclean which is supposed to be good at cleaning the cat and the sensors. Hopefully this will work; should do for £17.50.

If worst comes to worst, is it worth purchasing a second hand lamber sensor because I have found some off a 53 red 172?

I take it when a website like Parts Gateway sells a lamber sensor, they check to ensure it is in the correct working order?

I'd hope so not sure how they would realistically.

Do they just sell used ones if it new shoulnd't be an issue.

It's places like Four Ashes Renault, Just Renaults, RP Services, Cit-Ren etc that are breakers.

  CS Dungeon
Partsgateway, is just that I believe.

Its a gateway for breakers to sell there spare parts. PG wont even see the itmes in question as they will come direct from the breaker.

A brand new one is only £40............You have just spent £17.50 on that cleaning stuff:nono:

How come Renault want £110 for each sensor? An exhaust specialist said most of the generic ones are crap and to just bite the bullet and buy a reno one.
