Nearly lost it today!

Car  172mk2 - flame
Back end stepped outday! car started like a snake type movement down the road! i thought I was bound to crash into the barriers! but managed somehow to control it without skidding!

f**king s**t myself big time what are you meant to do to control the car? I know I didnt brake, just eased off alittle and just had a fight with the car to keep straight!

5secs seemed to last a lifetime! lesson learnt :dapprove:

Anyone who knows the area! A66 roundabout Ford/Mazda shell! going from Redcar to Middlesbrough! lost it just after the corner!
 
you should book yourself onto a skid pan course. ;)

you in theory should put the clutch down to get drive to all wheels and steer into the skid
 
ESP was on! will it of saved me?

The road is normally packed! in rush hour! I was so so lucky, not to go into someones side! I was over 2 lanes! fucked me up big time, didnt want to drive home!

I certainly didnt steer into the skid, would be more against it! As I didnt come to a halt, would be all at 40mph at least. Felt like the whole car was going to 180
 
to counter u obviously need opposite lock btu not too much like most people do...thats what causes snaking...with a front wheel drive car u have to b dam good to not spin/crash.....seems you got very lucky...
as said....lesson learnt

.......erm pardon!!!??? :S:S:S Doing this would take away any control you have from using the power!!!

What you should do it steer into it but dont over do it as it will do what it did to you & cause it to flick back again sometimes taking you all the way round this time....

.....keep your foot planted on the power (as much as this seems like the complete opposite to what you head is telling you) & as you feel the car starting to straighten up bring the steering back inline....

Easy in theory, difficult to do in practise unless you are prepared for it or have had lots of practise.

Best advice I can give is to find a decent sized roundabout on an industrial estate/quiet area at night at some point and practice - wet weather is good for practising too!!!

.....or alternatively dont lift off round a corner in the first place! LOL!

Maybe.

I only have my ESP on when it's raining.
 
No i didnt lift off in the roundabout, felt like my back end just went! it was kinda damp road, but nothing bad, felt like it slipped from right under me! I kept some power down when snaking.

All I could think about was my dad calling me a wanker!

Probably diesel spilt on the road too.....

Did you possibly brake, even the slightest lift off on a damp road can sometimes provoke it!!!

You should do what??? Clutch DOWN to get drive?? And to all FOUR wheels?? :S
Did Renault sneak some 4WD clio's on the market when we weren't looking?
 
Medd, if your asking people how to control a car, you seem far too inexperienced to be driving a car as powerfull as a 172. How long have you been driving? But i'm glad your came out of it ok and learnt a bit of a leason, its incidents like these that make a better driver. However, you should really be 'learning' how to control cars at speed in slower cars. As said above, when you get rear end action like you did and the car 'over steers', the thing to do is steer slightly in the opposite lock (to get the car pointing back the way you were heading) and accelerate out of it, to pull the front end back in front of the rear,if you like. If the opposite thing happens, and you get understeer where the front end isn't turning enough, and you find your self heading straight ahead, you carrying too much speed and/or applying too much throttle. Here you just need to back off the throttle and give very little correction to the steering, as when the front wheels gain grip you'll find the front end suddenly grips and snaps round the corner. If your not even on the throttle to start with when your understeering, you've simply overcooked the corner carrying too much speed and theres not much you can do, your simply a passenger and you (or your car) is doomed lol

What i can say is, its sounds like your a better driver then this guy...

^^^ lmao, he's right:D best advice would be not to do anything fast or violent! just small movements, dont panic! hard to do, coz it's a reaction!

but like i said 1st just keep your foot down, ie not more or less throttle
 
steer into it a litle bit and apply a tad more throttle, once you get the hang you'll be able to flick it out on rounderbouts by chucking it in, lifting off mid bend and planting throttle :cool:
 
Correct, pause, recover.

There's always the slightest of pauses, and as soon as you feel that you've got to get the lock back off quickly.

Doing it too slowly or too late means it goes the other way.

ok, just thought it was a little bit of a pointless comment, as this can happen even with 4 of the best tyres in the world on your car...
 
I know the roundabout well,can be taken at a fair rate of knots IIRC.Face it MEDD,you suck mate..:rasp:

The trouble with ESP is that it counters you in this kind of situation as you try to correct it does too and it gets confused.

But as said foot down ftw!

Tell me bout it! same thing happened to me today, but i put the brake on and ended in the barrier! Got told afterwards not to do that.... opps!

2 tyres need replacing, Passenger Light (got replacement) and new bumper needed! won't be doing that again!

its what they told me to do on a skid pan course ...then you lift off the clutch and then plant the power on :o
