I THINK my gear box selector may have gone funny

  Black Gold with cup packs
Some opinions and maybe a diagnostic would be great. When I start the car I have difficulty pushing the stick into first gear, I have to put it into 2nd before it will pop into 1st? It just will not go straight into 1st without it feeling I am going to destroy the gearbox.
What could my problem be?
lack of gear box oil?
Gear links?
Selector?

All answers appreciated

Oh I don't know when the gearbox oil was changed!
I will check service history!

Yeah try changing or topping up gearbox oil. I've had my engine out recently (Albeit on a mk1) but I put my selector back in about 1 spline out and its hard to get into first or sometimes second without giving it a few revs first. It may have slipped a spline on the shaft? Also could be syncromesh at the very worst.

box out strip and rebuild which isnt cheap. Gearbox oil is proberly £50 if you do it your self there is a guide somewhere

Gearbox oil is not part of the service, so unless you've done it, it's probably never been done.

i got the elf gearbox oil from renault for £25 iirc. and it cost literally a couple of quid for my garage to do it as part of my service. will improve matters slightly, but if youve got a selection problem i think youve got more serious problems.

I'm P/exing the car in just over a month so I don't want it to be too ridiculous, Hopefully a £100-£200 tops!
But if gear box oil resolves the issue, Great
I haven't had it done as I have only owned the car for a year
