Anyone on here running a unlocked iphone yet?

As above, i seen a few you tube clips with people running them on Vodafone etc, and was just wondering if anyone on here has a unlocked i phone??

easy, see if you get an iphone from france, its illegal to lock them over there, so apple cant lock them to any network, so you can buy them unlocked.

Would a French i phone work with a english sim/ network provider then?

If so i can see another trip to Paris in the pipeline ;)

If I walk into a O2 store do they make you sign up to a contract there and then or can you just buy the phone and walk out ?

I thought I would be able to buy one from my local Apple Centre on Friday but they said they don't sell them instore, is this the case at all of them ? and told me to go to O2 or the Carphone warehouse.

yeh it works with english network provider etc, and unlike unlocked phones you still have your warranty. Theres a shop around the corner from me, selling the french ones, looking £500 for them, im sure you could get them from france cheaper.

Pff why bother going to France and having to region hack them to be in English just get one from o2 as a present for someone else

You have to get them from 02 or carphone wearhouse yeh, and you have to sign up 2 contract etc, before theyll give you one!

Online from Apple it is then arse ...

As Rich says, you can get it from Apple online..

Eventually i think it will become sim free... Not anytime soon though i don't think?

you can buy them instore don't believe people who don't know what they are talking about

I thought you could just buy them from the apple store :S

You do - it's exactly the same process as an O2 Store or CPW.

You buy the phone, and walk out. You then sign up to the contract at home using iTunes :)

That's not entirely true.
You don't sign up to a contract when you buy an iPhone - you do it once you get home and plug it all in. The contract sign up is done using iTunes.

So, up until you want to use it, there is no contract :)

As soon as the apple/ O2 golden handshake expires.

I doubt it.
*If* it ever does expire, they'll move to another provider.

Apple will always partner someone, just to ensure all features work etc. Visual Voicemail, EDGE (which will be 3G soon anyway), fair use data tariffs.. Apple are very particular about this sort of stuff.

so are you saying i could walk into CPW, buy an iPhone, then jailbreak it and use it on orange and not be tied to anything to do with o2?

You can indeed walk in and buy a phone. You then sign up for the contract when you get home.

At the moment you can unlock them to work with O2 PAYG sims, O2 contract sims and tesco mobile SIM. I got the old man one from Carphone Warehouse and he is using it with a PAYG O2 sim for now.

They have found an exploit in the 4.6 bootloader but need for Apple to release 1.1.3 to achieve a full unlock as far as I can see.

Did you unlock it for your dad, if so is it as easy as say jailbreaking the ipod touch/iphone?

What i don't understand is if apple really didn't want people to hack the i phone, then why do they sell these without contracts?

it's very easy. currently turbosim is the unlocking method of choice, it's easy for me, but i work in IT....i've done 4 now :)

Gought my girlfriend and Iphone and its been unlocked for the last 2 months on Vodaphone... works with T-mobile and everything else I've tested it with.

The local one near me does not sell them, hence why I asked if some do and some don't.

Cool - Will try the O2 store tomorrow and try and grab one then, I have been reading up on the jailbreak for a normal O2 sim so will give it a try.

if u mean the apple shop in cheltenham... its not really an apple shop... its western computers and they just happen to sell mainly apple products... they also sell pc's...

cpwh or o2 will sell you one...

From all I've read online a full unlock is not currently available for the UK iPhone as the current baseband and bootloader combination will not allow it.

I'm not exactly sure why people on here are saying they have managed this as the usual unlocking sources have not.

as I've said before current unlocking kethodis with turbosim or just jailbreak for 02 customers

Turbosim is not really an option for most potential users, hopefully Anysim will be compatible again soon.

Say hello to my little friend ;)
