Went shopping today...

Been saving for 6 months, it was all finally worthwhile today...

(got the D80 battery grip as well, all from the nicest shop in the world, T4 in Swindon)

The screen is silly huge, I've got it next to my battered D50 and the difference is incredible. Oddly though, the grip is slightly smaller, but somehow feels better (seems to go 'in' deeper). I'm also loving all the extra buttons, makes most settings that bit quicker to change.

Still pretty ill at the moment but I'm going to try and get out and photograph some Porsche 911 GT3 RS' that are coming to Combe on Saturday, will also obviously have a play with some video footage (with the 300 f2.8!) to see how that all works out. Will report back to say/show how it all went.

I'm very keen to hear a review from you chris. Am still pondering my D90/300 upgrade options. How much did you pay in the end?

Nice one - I am holding out till Spring before I spend any cash hoping prices may have dropped a bit by then.

Wish I had waited another couple of weeks before buying my D80. As always I buy something and then it gets superceded by a better model. ARRRGGHHH!!!

When I bought the 80 I had no idea the 90 was due out. Funnily enough, Jessops didn't tell me either!

Enjoy anyway and hope you feel better soon. Look forward to seeing pics/video.

Can't remember his name, didn't stay as long as I would have liked as I have kidney stones and am really feeling it at the moment. Top place though, I phoned up yesterday and asked them to put it aside (which they did), know their stuff, that's for sure.

Test shots tomorrow, only had a little play so far but two things jump out at me, high ISO performance is obscene, and the video is stunning, f1.8 video footage ftw!

Lovely.

Does the grip house 2 batteries?

Yup two batteries, never had a grip before but it's really clever, the D90 has really detailed battery info, and with the grip attached it splits the screen in two and has details for each (can also fill it with AA batteries)

Looks just like my D40!

:rasp:

Honestly I was slightly underwhelmed when I actually looked at it the first time, looked pretty much like my D50 (apart from the gorgeous LCD on the back). However, it is covered in additional buttons (D50 has 13 and 1 scroll wheel, D90 has 20 and 2 scroll wheels) which make changing things on the fly pretty much instant. Lots of little details which all add up.

Looking fwd to your review

May upgrade over xmas or just after just waiting for prices to cool off slightly

I promise this is my first and last naff/boring/pointless Windows Movie Maker vid (hopefully get Premiere Elements or something soon...and some decent subject matter), but it gives you an idea of how stupidly easy it is to make effective footage...

The main thing is, it was great fun playing around with and will be getting a lot of use by me in the future, not bad for what is essentially a 'free' add-on. I was literally sat at the table waiting for my tea to cool and noticed the steam, so I just propped the camera up, set up like I would for a photo and hit the button. In the garden just had a little play with mid-footage focusing which is surprisingly smooth and easy in controlled conditions. I can't imagine there is a cheaper way of getting out of focus backgrounds and I've already got some ideas for a nice short vid when I'm in New York.

from what i've read, 50d performance is worse than 40d
so you've read the dpreview that everyone is talking about, its a bit of a farce really, they are not the normal reviewers, and they messed it up, they used a pre-release version of the adobe software for the 50d pics and then said they got of the right one at the last minute and changed the review to reflect, but they didn't.

There are lots of 40d owners on the forums of dpreview who have now got 50d's and all of them, yes all of them have said that the 50d is obviously better in all scenarios, so no-one can understand how they got to their findings in the test. Plus they used a different F number for the 50d and the lens they used has also come into question aswell, all interesting stuff.

Its raised a few questions about whether its totally impartial, how they came to the conclusion as the tests are not shown how they came to this conclusion etc and people are demanding a re-review.

Its only that one review, but as its quite a trsuted site its caused an uproar, especially as it seems to have been contracted out for this one and not done by the usual guy Phill.

Anyway, all i can say is that mine seems fantastic, especially in low light, the iso performance is amazing, not fired the flash once indoors. If I had a 40d i guess i could compare it but i can't so it doesn't really bother me, i would buy the 50d for the screen alone over the 40d and for the dedicated liveview button and extra settings, even if they were the same performance in low noise.

Havent read dp review but every other site/mag loves te 50d. Saw one in my local shop today for £850 body only. Was so tempted to get the credit card out but I am moving in a fortnight so will wait. He did say he has heard there maybe some canon cashback on the 50d before xmas...

Did buy myself a cable release though for my fireworks pictures tonight

btw they have the d90 body ony for £599.99

That's a pretty high price to pay for those features given the current price of the 40D...each to their own.

I bought my 50d from RGB-tech, would recommend them, very helpful and unlike all the other retailers out there were not fleecing people at launch, people like warehouse express were charging a ridiculous rrp of £1199, I paid under that with a kit lens!

This is a good review though, between the 50d, 40d and d90, also mentions the d300 as being the real rival.
http://www.cameralabs.com/reviews/Canon_EOS_50D/index.shtml

this is a good page as they talk properly about this high iso stuff, the 50d matches the 40d, but the important thing is that it does this with 50% more pixels, which is a great achievement, also means that if you have the image the same size on screen or printed out, the 50d will always look better because of this extra resolution to hide the noise, when comparing the individual pixels though they look about the same, and thats where some reviewers have gone wrong, the whole point was to make it perform the same at the pixel level and then gain the detail from the 50% increased resolution!

http://www.cameralabs.com/reviews/Canon_EOS_50D/noise.shtml

and as this is a d90 thread, we should include that link too!

http://www.cameralabs.com/reviews/Canon_EOS_50D/noise_2.shtml

also worth reading the conclusion and watching the video, very good review all in all and good that it includes all the cameras.

thats not all the features though, read the review above, 50% more pixels, in camera lens micro adjustment, HDMI, 4x the sensitivity, UDMA support, auto vignetting correction based on individual lenses pre-loaded.

there are lots of improvements.

sadly not, in the south, but i dealt with them over the phone, they seemed very genuine though, especially when i asked if they dealt with grey stock etc.

I liked them for not trying to rip people off at launch for being early adopters, would buy from them again for sure.

  Skoda Fabia Vrs 180b
Yeah they are good blokes. One of the lads today was telling me how they are one of the cheapest in the country for the D90 and if I found the cheaper ones he would match the price :D Will be buying from there whether I go for the 50d or just upgrade my glass

Im not quite sure i see the big deal with this high iso stuff.

The 40d produces completely useable images up to iso 800 and not bad ones past this. I have not found any reason on the last year in my area of photography to use over 800 iso. Granted i dont shoot much this time of year now motorsport season is over. But even so i did a few test days early last yr in the pouring rain with no problems at all.

Anyone with either 50d or d90/300 care to post some iso 800 images, to see if it really is that noiseless?

dk

  911 GTS Cab
pointless really as they will be resized to go on here anyway, only way is to get the same photo taken on a 40d and a 50d and d90 at the same iso and host on flickr and compare, but again, because the cameras have more mp's you still can't compare at the pixel level, as mentioned above, they are the same at the pixel level but when viewing the pictures at the same size on screen or printed, thats when you will notice the difference because of the higher pixel count.

What normally happens when you increase the pixel count is that the noise increases, so nikon and canon have worked on that element to mean it performs the same as the lower mp cameras, so that when you view the pic the noise artifacts are hidden by the increased density of the pixels.

have a read of the review above. Its difficult to show though really without having all 3 cameras, the review does just this though.

Its very impressive, what the software can do with it is also equally impressive, however i still cant say i can see a practical use for this ability with my photography.

The so called pixel race is also interesting, Whilst it cant hurt to have a 15mp sensor, equally i try not to crop if i can help it, rather take a decent image in the first place, i also dont really want to be carrying around hundreds of cf cards to feed a 15mp sensor. Have they changed the compression on the 50d at all? Or is it going to be using 1/3rd more memory than my 40?

Plus 10mp is more than enough for a decent poster print at a high dpi.

Maybe im just secretly jelous, and trying to justify not blowing a load of cash on one.:dapprove:

On the resolution thing, I really don't think it's something you need to be concerned about, I've been quite lucky in terms of things published etc in the past 2 years and 'only' having 6mp was never once an issue, even for the double page magazine spread (A3), pictures don't get published much larger than that which are still viewed close up. Unless you are submitting to image libraries or doing some particularly high end work I don't think it's necessary.

I'm the same as you with regards to ISO, apart from the Britcar 24hr I've never moved away from the lowest setting with motorsport as I use slow shutter speeds anyway. But the newer cameras are good enough that if you ever do need it, you can safely go ahead without needing to worry about any significant deterioration in quality. I've only had a quick play with mine but would have no hesitation in using up to ISO800 if needs be.

indeed, magazine prints are surprisingly low dpi aswell, they really aren't very high quality normally.

As for the image size, the jpg is between 3.5 and 8mb, which seems a surprisingly big range now i come to think about it!

raw are about 25mb i think, there are different raw sizes, sraw for instance, not sure on the size of those though.

I took a couple of 4gb to peru and never ran out, downloaded them to my laptop in the evening, but you get about 350 photos on jpg on a 4gb card.

nikon out numbered canon at the olympics this year

most of the people who got awards in the photographer of the year awards mainly used nikon....

seems like nikon are doing fairly well lol.

shock, you following me around again, how about reading the thread before mouthing off, it wasn't me who mentioned canon or the 50d first, it was andy and then clart, i just joined in, i didn't take it off topic, and so what if it did take a different route, thats what happens in discussions.

You like nikon, i like canon, we are all allowed to like different things, doesn't make you right though and wll done for spouting off some worthless statistics, as per usual its one sided, you make it sound like no-one uses canon.............
