Buying Clio Help...

  1.6 Ford Focus
I went to see the Mk2 Clio today and I like what I see, everything is fine... but, here comes the decision making nightmare, the handbrake seams to be really high... I mean REALLY high and it doesn't hold the car until its lifted as much as it goes.

The car is £1,350 and the idea I am having is to put a £50 deposit in and telling the guy to fix it, then paying £1,300 for the car.

The model is a 2001 Mk2 Grande 1.2 with 101,000 miles, I have driven it and everything seams fine to me but is there anything else I should look out for when buying a Mk2?

This really is a tough decision.

I only have a 15 or so mile radius from my area that I will travel to so all of those cars are a no and if I put my own post code in it comes up with the same cars I already looked at for around about £1,500.

I think I am going to call the guy tomorrow morning and make a £50 deposit and get the hand brake fixed.

I see, well as for the handbrake problem it's a 5min fix my old ph1 had the same problem all you have to do is tighten the handbrake cable and jobs a good one even if you took it to a local garage and told them that the cable need's tightened then they would prob's charge you a tenner tops :)

Also make sure it's had a cambelt change as these can be costly

Handbrake might just need adjustment, could also mean that the brakes need looking at. Have you let anyone with any car knowledge look at it?

Really? That's actually a comforting thought :) It's worrying when you hear stories about handbrakes needing to be fixed and costing up to £400 but if that's all that needs doing that's great.

The car passed its MOT a few months back and has a 12 monther on it I believe. Will get it all checked out though.

Not yet, only the guy at the garage who says he cant fix it for me but can get it fixed, myself and my dad have looked at it and driven it.

The worste senario then the rear shoes may need replacing aswell but if i remeber correctly for the front disks and pads and rear shoes cost me around £50 from my local car parts store so dont worry about that handbarake matey

My pal had the same problem with his sunroof it creaked all the time it was easliy sorted it took the sunroof off and palced bit's of a flunky (fake shamois) beneath the hinges and it cured the creaks :D

Get them to take you out for a drive in it see how bad the sunroof creaks :(

If it has one

Already have, and driven it myself.

The sunroof doesn't creek unless its been opened.

My dad is being a pain in the ass and has said numerous times that he doesn't want to pay more than £1,350 on such an "old" car which is stupid because I am paying most of the cost...

If it only costs up to £100 then I don't see a problem and I will go for it. I can't fit any parts like this myself by the way so that will be a garage job.
