2G to 3GS Questions

Ok so I dropped my 2G the other day and it seems to have lost all signal since. It sometimes gets reception, but then loses it again for few hours at a time. I pulled the phone apart this morning but couldn't see anything out of the ordinary.

So think I might bite the bullet and get a 3GS.

Is it pretty simple to transfer all the contacts etc over? Is it really that much better than the 2G?

I'm currently on orange, but take it the 3GS can't be unlocked yet? So I'll have to go onto O2?

Yes very simple. (use iTunes)

Yes much better. (processor, capacity, RAM, camera, GPS, compass, 3G, bla bla bla)

Yes can be unlocked via ultrasn0w!

So could I use my Orange sim in it?

Not sure I want to spend £500 on a phone tbh. Only paying £9 a month just now though which is nice!

You can buy the 16gb 3GS on o2 P&G for £440.

And then unlock to use your orange sim. It's really easy.

Looks like you can;t upgrade to software v3.1 yet tho if you want to do unlock.

£440 is a bit better. Bit out of touch with the iPhone stuff these day! :lolup:

Would I miss anything by unlocking it? Apps store? Dumb question probably! Or are there any downsides to unlocking?!

o2 dont have any in stock, ive been waiting for ages! Just bought a white 32gb of ebay :)

They go for around £450 ish for the 16gb on the bay :)

Just unlock it, stick your orange sim card in and away you go :)

I take it unlocking is pretty simple to do? I managed to unlock my 2G one no bother.

What did you pay for the white 32?

The only problems i can see at the moment are the fact that you have to make sure you don't upgrade the software to v3.1 as the unlock won't work YET. lol. But i'm sure will do pretty soon.

Here's the actual instructions to do it, bearing in mind you will need to Jailbreak first which is also very easy.

You shouldn't have any other problems.

Ok here is another question. Is it worth upgrading my firmware to 3.0.1 and unlocking it to see if that helps?

Or can that actually be done?

One thing I noticed.

If I restored the 3GS from a backup, the battery life was atrocious.

If I set it up as a NEW phone, battery was much better.

Might not be the same from a 2g to 3gs but it was for me.

I think my 2G is had its day TBH. I really want a new one, but over £500 for a phone is a lot of money. Specially when I would need to ***** about unlocking it etc..

Their telling fibs. The phones don't come as contracts, payg. there the same, one box for the iphone and then o2 just add a sim which comes in different packaging. They just say that as there going to make more money from the contracts.

Stop being so tight! Its great phone, if you're not in a contract move over to O2 and don't bother messing around with this unlocking rubbish.

they do allocate the phones to post and pre pay buy they can change them - just find a member of staff willing to do so :)

That's what I did with my 16gb 3GS, got it home, unlocked it and put my T-mobile sim in.

The Boy's only paying £9 for a contract. O2 are a big rip off IMO. You get nothing for your £30.

The guy runs a lamborghini, I hardly think its going to bankrupt him to move to an O2 tariff. O2 don't have great contracts on the iphone (other than the unlimited internet) but you pay your money and make your choice.

Buying a 16gb and doing a JB over 18 months works out at just over 600 at £9 per month, whether or not that covers any 3g use? Vs 18 month contract which is just over 800 and includes all you need data wise etc. Its not so bad if you plan to rinse the Internet.

The difference is probably a full tank of petrol ;)

Quick bump... Just bought one!

Nae moving to O2 and paying 30/40 a month when I'm paying £9 for a better tarriff.

Now.. Do I need to unlock, then jailbrake? Or other way around?

Schweppy I looked at that guide but I'm still a bit confused! lol

What ever you do, DONT upgrade to v3.01 in itunes. In fact what version did it come with?

After jailbreaking using a v3.0 IPSW (firmware file) you can then unlock.

i have a 2g, 3g and now 3gs, the 3g is a massive improvement over the 2g, and the 3gs is a huge improvement over the 3g...

Sorry I'm a noob! No idea what version it is.. How do I find out?
Should I plug it into the PC with the O2 sim card in? Or leave it well alone.. Im confused :(

On the phone go to settings, general, about. Then let me know what it says next to version.

You can plug it in to itunes and load music, etc but make sure you dont click update or accept anything to do with it lol. Hopefully it will be old stock that you bought and wont have new firmware.

LOL. Yeh thats fine dude.

It will run as normal then or without the sim it will run as an ipod touch.
