Server Cabinets

  Not a 320d
Ok so my girlfriend's dad had a house built a few years ago, its huage, and they are still getting things sorted, the whole house is hard wired with cat5 & 6 with about 4 ports in each room for some reason, these will be used for phones and also for the network.

The full lot runs to the cupboard under the stairs, and will eventually be terminated into a patch pannel, its all loose wires at the moment. What comes after this i dont know yet, he mentioned putting a switch in there - im guessing itll be a shitty netgear thing attatched to a shitty netgear router as using Cisco or Juniper equipment would be pretty overkill lol, and theres no real need for network securuty in there. Id do it for him but i cant terminate the ethernet cable into the patch pannel.

- To the point

Hes asked me to look for a "Server Cabinet". Not a new one unless itll be "cheap". Any idea EXCEPT FROM EBAY, where i could get one cheap. ??

it's piss easy to terminate the ethernet cables into a patch panel

Do a lot of these at work, but rather than using them huge depthed racks we use HellermanTyton Slim ones which are about 200mm deep.

We get them from comms express but cannot find them on the site :( Also where are you in the country, could do with some private work ;)

Where are you based mate. I do all of this for a living so we could do and supply everything for you?

27U is a bit excessive for one server and a switch or two?! What's he gonna be doing, running a data centre from his cubby hole?

I asked him if he was on crack tbh. They will be running CCTV and HDMI through the house using Cat6.

Well my previous posts seem to have dissappeared, apparantly they will be running the cctv system through the network, along with Sky, or the HDMI rarther, and the computers and phones. I dont know what networking hardware they will be using, like i said i think Cisco would be a bit OTT but "they arent short of money" so to speak.

They want a 27U 600x600 Rack OR cabinet. would be better if it was just a rack. They were looking at one on fleabay for £125ish, he said he would be willing to go higher. They are based Near Hull, Hedon.

Your going to need convertors on either end to convert cat6 to HDMI, and if its ran near power cables it can go tits up! A 24 port netgear switch should do you for the data side of things. You can then do the phones in a few different ways. You can get 2x 1u 24 point patch panel and strip the incoming phone cable and punch it down across every point and then plug into the individual rooms on another?

The converters you refere to are called baluns. There are several types of baluns out there eg cat5 to hdmi, cat5 to vga, and cat5 to composite.

Theyre a very useful and versitlie piece of equiptment. Ive installed plenty especially when doing wall mounted plasma installations when the customer wants their av equiptment located remotely eg in an understairs cupboard

Yeah i know about the converters, i think they will be using a distro box for the sky somewhere too, its not me designing or implementing the network. I think they will be doing that for the phones yes, they have the phone connected through a converter, Rj11 - rj45 converters.

HDMI over Cat6 will only run 30m.

Thought it was 60, nvm though, its not my network.
