Improving mpg

Car  clio 197
Guys quick question.

How could I improve my mpg on my 197? Would a live map/remap do much? Just I'm getting about 90miles out of £20.

Thanks

Marty

eek!! How hard are you driving it?? Thats like 225 miles a tank? Should be getting at least 300 if not 350.

Remap should help, but I would look at your driving, or if its not that, get it into a dealer. Whats your MPG reading saying?

How many miles are on the clock? More miles the better mpg. Mine was 21mpg at 9k miles, it's improved loads now it's on 20k I usually get about 32, but sometimes as low as 27. 37 on motorway runs.

Strart doing 70mph then :P

Woah didn't know you were gettin that now needs!

I did a run down to wakey and back last night in the ph1... bashed on most the way and averaged just under 37

With town "hoofing" i usually see 34'ish average

197's are known to guzzle fuel aren't they?

Roffle. I do, Blighty. I just keep it on cruise control and get the higher mpg. On the way to work it's rare I could get up to that speed. :dapprove:

EDIT: Yeah, Tupps, it gets quite a bit now if I'm careful. More miles otc has seen a massive improvement in the mpg I get. In the early days it guzzled more than Michelle McManus.

That's about what my car does. It's a pain in the arse. I try to drive like a granny most of the time to conserve fuel but still only get about 260 miles to a tank.

Glad I only do 150 ish miles a week!

How come there's such a big difference between the fuel consumption of the 197 engine in comparison to the 1*2? It's about 10-15MPG difference on average!

I got 348 miles from my ph2 172 by still going for a bit on warning light. Cost £48 to fill up though :(.

Maybe you're gona have to push it less?

Filled my 197 up last week and did 320 miles before petrol light came on (30 miles left). That was a mix of motorway and town driving. Average mpg was around 28mpg.

I drove it like a gran and it stretched 110miles from £20 at best.

My trip constantly says 23mpg?

I do roughly 70 miles a day. Sometime as much as 100.

What diff would I get if I remap it. Need the map tbh anyway I get a flat spit in second gear at low revs :(
Help lol

Herc, how many miles are on it? Like I said, mine was shocking when I first got it at 9k miles, I used to get 21mpg if I was lucky!

Needster she's a 07plate and has 25kon her.

I checked parkers and said it is 10.3k for trade price. Considering trading it for a diesel motor if the map won't improve the mpg...

WOW, Honestly?!

Just stay parked up with the engine off... that'll get you from A-B

Lol exactly. Silly comments :P

I don't go heavy all the times. Plus I went proper slow to test the water to see if it was my driving and I still doesn't improve all tht much!

Ooooft. That is bad then, mines a 57 and 20k and mine's much improved. You shouldn't get getting that low, not now anyway. Not sure how much difference a remap might make.

Does the new GT come in diesel?

Not really, You'd be surprised how many people think they are driving economically when actually they aren't,

If it isn't your driving there is obviously something wrong with the car,

bah, 23mpg is all i really get round town. I'm up in the lakes at the moment and have just averaged 32.6mpg for the tank i've just used. Thats mainly on the M6 up here and the A66 last night.

Until you look into remaps etc. just experiment with changing your driving style.
Biggest enemy to MPG is wieght and changing speeds constantly, accelerating and wasting energy by braking.
There are probably loads of sites with advice on this sort of thing these days, just google it.
Check your tyre pressures, empty the car of heavy items if you have any, don't use Air Con, change up sooner, cruise to a stop etc. etc. Boring stuff.....

If your getting mpg that bad you may aswell chop it in and buy a Scooby or Evo. Least you'll have the performance to match the mpg lol

20's in a Clio on normal driving. Thats shocking like

But that is the fun of owning a 197 :nono:

Why does everyone complain about MPG then, can't have it all,

MPG in a Clio is usally very very good, far better than its rivels. should be in the mid to high 30's at least, in a 172 and 182 under normal driving.

Iv heard the 197's are thirsty.

Poor mpg could point to a problem with the lamdba sensors potentially

Not quite sure about that. My CTR was better mpg than my 197. I think the issue is that the gearing is for performance not economy. Sitting on the motorway in 6th at 80mph = 4,500 rpm. That is going to use fuel. End of really.

AS said its rivals all average higher MPG. They are not any slower. My GTI gives me atleast 360 miles to a tank (£55) and thats motorway.

The OP is getting an MPG only slightly higher than a VEE?!?!?

There's definitely something not right. Mines cushty and the majority of my driving is 8 mile round trips to work and back each day, which is starting, sitting in traffic, stopping, acceleration, slowing again and it's never below 27mpg these days.

It's either a club foot, or something's up.

Aint bein funny but if u got a car like that its hard not 2 boot it bout thats y u buy a car like that not 2 drive round like a granny. I wouldnt worry bout mpg

I agree but what else would you suggest? they guy is asking how to improve MPG. The fun of a 197, or a 1*2 is on the right roads, in the right conditions, agreed. Until then, driving around town, on the motorway etc, I just drive it as I would any other car, economically, not pointlessly up and down the gearbox. I always think it is comedy when I see people approaching a red light with their foot down for example, even though they could coast to it and still get away at the same time.
My 182 delivers 40mpg on a long run, cruise control on but it is a lot higher geared at 70 than a 197 by the sounds of it - 4500rpm:eek:
Another reason not to swap;)

Not really. Not everyone finds it necessary to brap around like an idiot every day. Fair enough, have some fun in your drive at times, but I'm not going to rag my car from door to door on the run to work.
