LY 182 or Trophy?

I'd say go with your heart tbh.

The trophy is a nice car but driving wise isnt that special.A meg laps bedford faster so its not mind blowing. The feel of it may be nice, but i dont think a 182 in a nice colour would be a million miles away tbh..

Trophy on B roads leaves a Cup packed 182 standing on track there both OK but need tweaking to get them right.

Each to there own though.

:)

Quite a discussion this with some good points.

I suppose another option with £8K would be a 172 Cup, Coilovers/Buckets and ITB's with change enough change left over to pay my insurance for the year.

If I had a 8k budget I'd go for the trophy. The 172 cup with ITBs won't be worth much in a couple of years, whereas I can see the trophy holding it's value much better!

Dare i push the boat out and ask if anyone can think of a better car for £8k than the Trophy....im struggling tbh. ;)

Can you start looking at 197s in that price range?

Not quite, im between price brackets, it would be high mileage or a dog, really need around £9k+ for a 197, with which money i would be looking at Corsa VXR's.

Folks seem to be forgetting that the Trophy has the more capable chassis.

LOL they do but unless taking it to a track regularly its irrelivant.....I have been round the twistys in mine many a time with just standard cup suspension and i know for a fact that even though it puts a smile on my face i wasnt driving even that to its maximum capabilitys!

Its horses for courses - The Trophy boys will always say go for a the Trophy, the 1*2 boys who own a standard colour will say LY's just a colour and go for the Trophy and i would to some extent too but it wouldnt be for the suspension or the looks.

I like LY TBH, but sometimes the premium isn't worth it.

Yeh, the Trophy is a better drive if you really really really push it you'll notice it. Otherwise, not so much. If you do lots of track stuff, then maybe a Trophy would be for you.

But otherwise you're paying a lot of extra cash for bits you won't need. Plus the fact it's higher than Amy Wineo on a Saturday night.

The 182 with the packs is a good car in its own right. £3k extra is a lot. Not worth it IMO. Just spend it on a new big tv/holiday. Both.

The trophy isn't that much better on the track, over a cup packed 182. It's the bumpy broken British B-roads where the trophy excels.

You have £8k.

Spend £5k on a 182 that's not in a girls colour and have a couple of decent holidays.

Already going Tenerife in March and Turkey in June and not long been back from Africa, i get my fair share of holidays.

£5k 182, £800 Coilovers, £200 fitting and setting up.

Leaves you £2k to keep in the bank.

This is the other option but it just seems that as soon as you change anything from standard your just asking fro trouble and you immetiately take away the OEM feel. After years of modifying i think i need a car thats good out the box.

Depends on what mods you do to the car IMO.

I've had H&R coilovers, 4 pots etc.. on my car now for 40k without any probs.

Might just be my experience then, i put Coilovers on my Mini and it nearly fell apart, lol.

  Clio 182 Trophy
The Trophy ride quality is far better than a clio 1*2 fitted with coilovers and the handling is better than that with H&R's fitted, tested over B roads anyways. I may just be a better driver (and im not blowing my own trumpet, I hate cocky drivers) but my Trophy was far quicker than the H&R'd clio I had a run with.

You get what you pay IMO ;)

I've driven both, and TBH I didn't find the trophy set up that much better then my H&R'd set-up 172.

The fact is you need to change the suspension completely on a standard 1*2 cup/non cup for it to handle as well as a Trophy, and then you ruin the ride quality.

Why buy a LY 182 cup when you can buy a Trophy for slightly more, which has Recaro seats and Sachs Remote reservoir Dampers. Its far better out of the box than a LY 182.

tough choice really, both great cars. I suppose it depends what you want, if you want epic handling buy a Trophy, if you want epic looks buy a LY.
You could buy a LY and then spend a fortune fitting the Sachs shocks then you'd have the best of both ;)

I'd go for the trophy out of the two tbh, LY looks the tits but I'd feel a tit in it I think. BUT if I had £8k to spend then I'd be looking at 225's, not Clio's

Already though about 225's but it would be older, higer mileage and not as well spec'd as the clio, ie no sach's dampers, recaros etc. I even got an insurance quote and it was only £9 a month more than my mini.

  clio rs
trophy is a great car - but best of both worlds go for a LY and spend money on Recarros and H&Rs
