Re: K-tec Gearbox Mount Problem

Yeah, basically becaust its a little bit too long the bolt cant come up enough so it clamps the whole mount together.

Should have some news on it tomorrow hopefully, if not i'll give K-tec a little ring :)

Re: K-tec Gearbox Mount Problem

Genuine group N ; little different. Costing three to four times as much ;)

But yeah, K-tec call them group N mounts

Re: K-tec Gearbox Mount Problem

May be worth checking, when I changed my clutch over the weekend, I noticed the stud you bolt the mount into was loose (the nut is underneath the bracket that bolts onto the gearbox).

It was a good 5 turns loose  I put a blob of locktite on and tightened it up, did feel alot better after and cut down the vibrations, I am pretty sure this will solve your problem as I could never get my nut fully tite!

Re: K-tec Gearbox Mount Problem

I checked the bolt Mr Gray, everything was tight. Its deffently the top hat which is incorrect :( Bit of a shame that my car is unusable once again :(

Re: K-tec Gearbox Mount Problem

I'm going to mount the purple dogbone bushes and a new renault gearbox mount, I shouldn't have unwanted vibrations right?

Re: K-tec Gearbox Mount Problem

Bit of a worry as I only got my mounts 2 weeks ago

Think I'll pull the battery off this weekend and check that it's ok

That picture of poweys worries me - surely there should be more bolt come up through the nut than that??

By the way - the seat of the nut on mine seems smaller than yours - and fits into that cut out on the top plate

Re: K-tec Gearbox Mount Problem

Under the metal top hat I have a separate rubber 'washer' do you have that?

I should of taken some photos!

Re: K-tec Gearbox Mount Problem

Hrmm even more bizarrely - the photo on KTR's website shows quite a big cutout in the top of that plate to allow the nut to drop further down into it

Thats the exact way you fit it.. it comes to you like that, cant see how else you could fit it tbh, infact its easier to swap the nuts and bolts around and feed the bolts from underneath, the battery tray has lugs to hold them in place (thats how the OE ones are fitted)

Re: K-tec Gearbox Mount Problem

Yeah thats what I did - swapped those bolts so they come up from under

The point I'm trying to make is that top metal plate has a recess machined into it - which the nut on my gearbox mount would slot into and drop down 3mm to allow you to get more threads on the bolt

But crispy's top plate only has a very tiny cut out - nowhere near as deep as that photo - and also his nut has a much bigger loose washer on the bottom of it that wouldn't fit into that cutout

It looks to me like it's been badly machined

Re: K-tec Gearbox Mount Problem

Abso-f**king-lutely marvellous

Just whipped my battery off and checked mine - everything is tight, the big bolt coming up from the gearbox isn't loose at all - but that rubber bush on the bottom is rattling around completely loose

Not impressed - with how much these mounts cost to have one that's machined wrong

Who do I contact at k-tec?

This also explains why I'm getting loads of feedback through the dashboard - vibrations - as the top hat is pressing hard up against the bolt rather than compressing the rubber mount as I suspect it should be doing :(

Re: K-tec Gearbox Mount Problem

Just ring they guys up, there all pretty helpful and sure they could direct your call LOL!?

Re: K-tec Gearbox Mount Problem

Woop - Sean is uber-helpful

Right vibratechnics have agreed that they've been machined wrong - everyone who's had a set since March 1st will be getting a replacement top hat in the post ASAP

The new top hat is 4mm shorter - and the top recess is machined for a standard washer - and also comes with the washer and a new nyloc nut

He said there isn't any problem with running the car as it is - but as a fix you can either chop 4mm off the bottom of the top hat - or run a 16mm drill through the middle of it - which will then allow it to fit over the top of hex bolt coming up from the gearbox

I think as I'm doing york this weekend I'll pull mine off and stick a drill through it - and use that until the replacement comes

They don't want any old ones back - just throw them in the bin :)

Re: K-tec Gearbox Mount Problem

Yeah it really is - I don't think i'd of noticed that which could have ended in tears - cheers mate

I noticed somthing was wrong straight away when i drove down the road, did you not get the really loud vibrating from the mount at 6000rpm?

I pulled over straight away and fiddeled around to find the black washed was loose.

But i suppose i dont have the battery there and you do.

Re: K-tec Gearbox Mount Problem

I have bad vibrations from fitting the mounts yeah - dashboard rattles at 3.5-4k but I assumed that was just because they are group N mounts

Searching on here half the threads say no extra vibration, half say loads - so I was just gonna live with it

Now I realise it's because the bottom of the mount has bottomed out on the gearbox bolt lol
It looks visually fine when fitted and everything torqued up ok

Re: K-tec Gearbox Mount Problem

My centre nut looks the same as the above in terms of how far down the nut and thread is. Mount was bought at the end of Feb tho so no idea if its from the dodgy machine'd batch or what?? :S

Would be good if there was pictures of what a correct fit mount / nut should look like.

I ordered mine last week in february - was sent out 1st march

He said all march deliveries are faulty

The bolt should stand up 4mm more than in my pic - so you should really be able to see the first thread

If you put your hand under the battery tray you can feel the black washer underneath and mine is just rattling around loose

Sean said they have a list of all the people affected and he's sending names and addresses to vibratech so hopefully if you're affected they'll just send a brand new one out

Re: K-tec Gearbox Mount Problem

so the ones that i've recieved today are faulty?

I need the replacements by tuesday 6th latest as I'm booked in with Rentech for fitting.

Re: K-tec Gearbox Mount Problem

Si - the top hat on the upper gearbox mount - measure the thickness of it

Should be 11mm apparently - but ours are 15mm

But yeah I think all of them are faulty from 1st March up to friday when chrispy told K-Tec

They've got 45 orders to re-do

Re: K-tec Gearbox Mount Problem

Hi Guys,

Just to add to Fuzzy's comments, there has indeed been a problem with the mounts received from 01/03/2010 into our stocks. The Top Hats have been machined too tall and without enough clearance to clear the post when tightening down. We have tested our stock here to find the same problem. For this reason, any members having ordered, but not received their gearbox mounts will be doing so once the stock has been rectified.

Vibra Technics have agreed the following:

1. Replacement Top Hat, Washer and Nylock Nut will be issued directly to our customers affected by this problem. A full list has been sent to them including addresses and contact telephone number, this is the case for UK and overseas customers.

2. Old / Faulty units can be discarded immediately.

3. This does not effect the warranty on mounts supplied within this period.

If there are any further questions or if people want to check they are on the list please do not hesitate to call us.

Sean.

Re: K-tec Gearbox Mount Problem

cheers, Sean.

Have Vibra Technics given any idea on timescale of the replacements?

Re: K-tec Gearbox Mount Problem

They should start being sent out from Wednesday this week, sadly it is typical there is a Bank Holiday weekend! So delivery should be Thursday to Wednesday of the following week. If Rentec need to drill the centre out to 16mm to cure the problem , this will be no issue and does not effect the mounts operation. If you then decide to change over top hats, this can be done at your leisure, if at all.

It behoves us and Vibra-Tecnics to issue a replacement part as opposed to a fix, but the fix is equally as functional for those with the tools etc to do it.

Sean.

Re: K-tec Gearbox Mount Problem

I'll have another look back through the thread and see if I can get the top sorted myself this week.

cheers for the help :)

Re: K-tec Gearbox Mount Problem

Sean - thanks for the help on the phone earlier and for clearing up on here. Great that this is getting sorted quickly - can't be helped about bank holiday weekend

Si - find someone with a bench drill (as you want it to be straight really) and run a 16mm bit down it

To be honest though chap - I fitted both my engine mounts in 30minutes with just a trolley jack and a handful of tools - you could just do it yourself when the new top hat arrives ;)

Re: K-tec Gearbox Mount Problem

So what do i need to do to it? drill it out or turn it down?

Re: K-tec Gearbox Mount Problem

You can do either according to Sean

You can either machine 4mm off the bottom of it
Or drill the center hole out to 16mm

Either would be a temporary fix until the new top hat arrives

Re: K-tec Gearbox Mount Problem

Well from what Sean said they have remade them 4mm shorter and with a bigger recess cut for the nut

If you machine 4mm off the bottom I guess that'd be quite close to the official fix - but personally I'd probably chuck the new one on when it turns up for the 10mins it takes to do :p
