Coilovers making STRANGE noise?!

Car  R26
Right over the last week or so the front springs on my coilovers seem to be making loud 'springing' noises if i full lock either way or go up a steep drive?? Its hard to explain the noise but lastnight it must have done in atleast 10 times and i only drove round town... Is there any reason for this or is it just normal and the springs 'working' ?

Thanks Stu :)

is it this?

Mine dont make any noises mate.

This isnt a good sign :(

What top mounts do you have on?

KTR Solid

Is it a clunking noise coming from one shock in particular?

I cant tell but im going to go out and try and listen more.

Nah its more of a 'released' twanging noise :(

Are you 100% sure they've been fitted correctly? Sounds like something is fitted wrong and when you're turning the spring is getting caught up then twanging as it's released again.

Yeah it does sound like its getting tight as i turn then releasing causing the noise?

I'm probably wrong but my ex had this problem with his saxo after he bought some coilovers cheap from a mate ... it turns out that the monkies that put them on had somehow managed to put the springs on upside down! :S it sounded like a loud donking / twanging noise when turning. Not good!

Thats the noise im getting, ive had the front wheels off, cant see any cracks or breaks in the springs so god knows what it is...

Had it on one of mine, I ended up stripping them down and fitting new topmounts to both as the bearing had gone on one of them!

yes i am experiencing this problem as well, it must be the bearing on the mount that isn't working when turnin the wheel

This is exactly the problem, the Ktec Soild mounts have rusted from the underside and totally stiffened up and not allowing any movement on both sides! Word of caution, unless theyre being fitted to a track only car, steer clear!

seriously dissapointed with these when i took it to bits.
general opinion is very high for k-tecs alloy mounts.

in short they are built of crap!!!

i honestly feel that ktec should refund anyone who has purchased these or redesign them and replace the FOC. i am utterly discusted with the quality.

should have the car safe again tonight :D

Im pretty shocked too, like i said on the phone, theyve only been fitted about 6 months or so, cant believe in that time the bearings can get to that state... best bet is to take some pictures and send them to ktec, cause its worrying to think how many road cars have these on..

Really appreciate the work so far from you guys mate and keeping me upto date etc :) Also on the phone there was mention of an alternative to throttle bodies?

I was gonna buy these mounts at the weekend :(

Thanks for the heads up and hope you get it sorted.

/craig

You won't want the MF ones mate. There over £350 IIRC lol. Good though.

Ahhh haha, think ill wait for a lottery win for them then :P

Anything must be better than the ones ive being running though..

Oh and if the car is sorted by tomorrow ill be driving through Sheffield on Saturday if you fancy a little meet Boosh?

What i've said all along. They churn out substandard parts at expensive prices. Cheap tat springs to mind!

Whack some ASTs on there, I've had mine on for about 6K now with no problems.

Good you got it sorted BTW.

Sorry for the noob question....but can I uprate my top mounts even though im just using springs not coilies?

Yes.

Back on topic; theres nowt wrong with standard?? If its a daily car, theres no need for solid top mounts.

What benefit would there be? Sorry for these questions, I thought it would be better this way than starting a new thread!

Yeh I will do. I will text a few of the local lads when I know a rough time etc.:)

Sounds good mate, fingers crossed its fixed in time or ill be driving down in my old 306.. ghetto stylin aha!

Yeah seems that way, im really surprised they've gone after this amount of time :\

From AST's website - 'Soilds topmounts provide better steering response and increased driver feedback, whilst maintaining the vehicle geometry and improving the damper performance.'

I personally think solid top mounts are overkill on a road car. You need some 'give' imo.

if there was a way of getting grease or oil into the bearings they would be fine, but these ones had started loosing the crome plating on the "ball" then rusting and just siezed. if you have them fitted on your car please for the love of god keep the soaked in wd40.

but in this case the damage was already done.
there is 100% nothing wrong with rubber top mounts.

We have recently change manufacturer of the top mounts but we will have to look back at the spec of the bearings that were being supplied by our old supplier. The bearings should not be seizing up after a short time.

As with many things we have to rely on 3rd parties to make some parts for us so this will be chased up with them. Can anyone with any issues please PM us and we will see what we can do to sort this out. This thread is the first I have heard of this.

David.

if the quality of the bearing has improved then i would happly re-fit them to this car.
but in this case the bearing hasnt even been inserted correctly, damaging the alloy mount.

if i were concidering having them fitted on my own car i would like to see the lower part of the mount (the bit that actually mounts to the strut) made larger to fit snugly in the strut top, like the Mark Fish ones.

I believe i left mine (the ones in mention) at Hutchie's garage and if he is happy to send them to you im also ok with that :)

you also left your invoice. TIT! lol

is it nice to drive again?? love the sound of it, swap for itb'd 1600?

i can take some detailed pictures and email them to you, saves on postage, its pretty clear to see the defects.

Mate it feels better than ever, couldnt be happier with it, and yeah it sounds really alive through the revs now :)

and i know i forgot it... realised about 20 miles away :\ any chance you could send it to me, just i kinda need it for the book.

Did you get the Coilovers all fitted on yours?
