New brake pads for my 172cup? Anybody got any advice?

  172 cup
Hi members need your help?

I've got a 172cup and need to replace the front pads. I am running the standard brakes at the moment and wondered if I can get better pads for the car, or will it cause any problems for the standard set up of the car? Any advice would be much appreciated on what you run, or whats the best for performance etc?

ds2500 are very good. I had these on my Cup (with Brembo discs) and I was impressed - much better than standard. Not cheap though!

I don't need to change my discs yet, so if I run the ds2500 with the standard discs will I still notice a difference to the braking performance and would it be worth the extra expense still. I'm not worried about price and more about improving my driving experience.

I think they should work better; I'm sure people have used them on standard discs and have noticed a difference. The standard Cup brakes were not great, imo, and really poor in the wet!

Should try GreenStuff pads then makes the standards feel brilliant lol.

As Gaz says though, DS2500 and Brembo HC discs is a good set up, have it on mine currently and the stopping power is very good.

I've checked out yozzasport, just over £100 for ds2500 and £50 for greenstuff. I've found the cup a real handful in the wet for stopping, rain isn't it's friend but in the dry i've been really impressed. When the discs need doing I will do a complete brake upgrade but for now just pads. So whats the verdict, go the whole hog with ds2500 or test out the greenstuff?

I've no experience with Greenstuff but I reckon you should be able to source the ds2500 pads for a better price elsewhere. I'm sure I paid £85 for my set but I can't remember where I got them. Either set will be an improvement on standard.

As said the Ds2500 are very good but I find they're a bit aggressive for everyday use and WILL get on your tits in stop start traffic (Squeal!). I've lost count how many times i've locked them up when some c##t has pulled out on me. I've done five trackdays on them and 7000miles and they are still sharp as. I'd go for stock for every day or take them out between trackdays

Brembo MAX and Ferodo DS2500s here, absolutely brilliant once you get some heat in them!

Mine only squeal very slightly under a certain braking pressure, still got the shims in.

if you're running standard pads now, and dont want to change disks, use standard pads again. You wont see the benefit of new uprated pads on old disks

i'm playing with the shims at the moment and wonder if it's an idea to keep them in and file the pads for clearance if needed. got CLs at the mo and they rattle violently without the shims, which may (or may not) have contributed to the failures people on here have reported? apart from acting as springs and limiting the violence of any rattling, the shims also provide a smooth surface for the pads to slide on, which rusty carriers won't

taking it all apart again tonight as i think i've taken a little too much off the pads:rolleyes:

thinking of EBCYellows 'next', as £110+ for brake pads on a shopping trolley isn't great

no remove the shims and clearance the pads so you have 1mm play with the pad in the caliper, trust me 100% on this

pads MUST be free to move in the carrier, they won't rattle due to the spring on the top of the pads (that's why the CL's rattle about)

Don't bother with MAX, no need. HC's will do just fine.
