How long until we get 3D TV without glasses?

Toshiba already released the tech, similar to that used on the 3DS, about a month after the other manufacturers models needing glasses hit the shelves. So I'd guess that it will happen in the next year or so once it's perfected, the major problem being viewing angle ATM.
Until it's glasses free I still think it's a pointless, expensive fad.

I wasnt sure of it was 100% possible as with the glasses you can flip the eyes the image is going to as everybody has a more dominant eye. And the 3d doesnt work properly when the front image is going to th less dominant eye?
I got a free upgrade through warranty and tbjh dont use the 3d that much. But i know if i flip the eyes the image is syncing with the 3d just gives me a headache.

This really. Glasses are far too expensive to own a set big enough for your family and friends to watch a film together. Even then it's not 3d as we know it, 3d at a cinema is in a different league and then there's the likes of COD in 3d... yeah thanks I really want the scoreboard yet virtually nothing else in 3d xD

Well im going to get the 55" Samsung you've got. Because of your thread. But if I'm spending that money i don't want something new to come out too soon!
Oh right. Well of course something new will come out soon.
All I'm saying is that my experience of 3D in my home is that it is very worthwhile and far from a fad. I had no interest in it before I bought this TV and tried it for myself. It does very much depend on the content though. Some stuff looks s**t.
Eug, be aware that it only comes with one set of glasses. Depending on where you buy it, you could maybe haggle another pair thrown in. I got some on Amazon. £44 each. Hardly going to break the bank.

Anyway, on topic. I have read that glasses-free tech should be in homes sometime in 2013. Not sure how accurate that is. Definitely off-angle viewing is supposed to kill it. I'm unsure if they have or can overcome this limitation. Personally I don't find wearing the glasses a hinderance at all, but yeah it would be good to not need them...IF the effect is as good.
Yeah I do. The Samsung ones fit over the top no problem. Seen a whole feature length film or two so far and several hours of gaming, and I've not found it uncomfortable. Obviously it would be nicer without them though. It also ideally has to be in a darkened room, or at least with no direct sunlight in your field of vision, as otherwise you get flickering in the peripheral vision. For example, if I leave my blinds slightly open with the sun streaming through, my window will be flickering.

Remember I'm only talking about my experience with my TV. All tellies are not equal. Some may be better than mine and some will surely be worse. I understand that plasma is generally meant to be slightly better for 3D, but again, all is not equal. From everything I've read the Samsung that I bought is supposed to be one of the best 3D sets currently available. I have very little other experiences to compare it to though. I didn't buy it for 3D anyway. I bought it for the size and image quality.
Eug, if you do buy the Samsung, PM me and I'll fire over the best calibrated settings as taken from the AV Forums. Also be aware that although the black levels are amazing, you WILL sometimes see some mild backlight blooming with a black scene in a pitch black room, especially off-angle. That's pretty much just LCD for you though. Everything else is so good that it's a non-issue (for me at least).

I fully intend to. Seen it online brand new for £1995 delivered. May have to.
My friend fitted out Roman Abramovich's house with about £100k worth of TV's and gadgets. So ill get him to come and set up mine inc new surround sound.
I've no idea if you have a 3D set, but it's more than the scoreboard in 3D. IMO 3D at home has more depth than the cinema non active shutter glasses.
Glasses, well they are about £60 iirc, I've got 4 pairs, but 3 came with the TV.
Roy, I saw your TV in John Lewis today (I've never seen it in Currys/Comet, probably too good for there). WOW. Had a demo on it, and they guy certainly sold it to me, stunning.
