Insurance Renewal time... the quotes so far

Oh yeah, Have you tried putting you parents on your insurance as named drivers with EUI group. Brought mine down a few thousand pounds :)

This, when I read the OP I knew there was something wrong with his admiral quote but couldn't quite think what. 2 older female drivers and bam, instant mega discount!

LOL! surely that cannot be the first time you've spoken to another James?

LOL, I thought the same

When I renewed this year the operator had the exact same name as myself. Was weird when I had to ring back.

'Can I speak to James'
'can I ask whos calling?'
'eh... James.'

In my department of around 20 people, there are four Daves lol

I clearly should of mentioned he had same middle and last name.

Anyway, they're good guys to just speak to.

I'm with Elephant on Dales old 182 Bren. Younger than you, driving for a couple of months less with the same NCB. My postcode is the second to worst rating, parked on the road (It's a quiet coul-de-sac but that is irrellevant to them). Only reall difference is my average mileage which I've got at 5000 a year which tbh I need to drop next year as I'm nowhere near that.

Quote on the car as standard was £870 quid. With the exhaust and suspension it went up to £1030. That's fully comp. That was off a comparison website aswell because I really can't be arsed ringing them up.

You shouldn't have told me that.. I think the fact I commute has made a difference too.

There are a lot of details you have missed out, almost every question you get asked when going through a quotation can effect the price you pay. Comparing what you pay against someone else doesn't really work.

True, but it should. The amount that it varies just shows how much b*llocks it really is. Hence why I just go through comparison websites. Either way I'm going to get ripped off.

True, but it should.

Not in my opinion. You could be comparing against someone who has for example had 2 recent fault claims Or someone with a DR conviction? Or someone with a 18 year old named driver on the policy. Far too many variables to compare.

I have no convictions, or any claims against made/made against me. I'm sure that Bren was the same.

And the rest of his risk? The point remains, I'm not disagreeing with you for the sake of it but as I say, comparing risk against each other doesn't work and I disagree that it should, I want my insurance premium dictated on the risk I present.

So if you want it based on the risk YOU personally at the age of 18 do you think it's fair that you pay a lot of money just because a high % of 18 year olds are a risk? You may be the worlds most sensible driver at 18 so you actually aren't being quoted for the risk YOU present, rather the risk someone your age may or may not present.

As I say, I'd want the premium based on the risk that I present, and as an 18 year old I'd hope I'd realise that is quite a risk indeed. I used to drive like a c***. I used to pay £1300 to insure £500 worth of MG metro, been there, done that.

I've just seen that the OP has had an accident.

And what Rhys has just said is spot on. If each quote is about the risk that I pose then why am I tared to the same
brush as the rest of the d*ckheads my age who do drive dangerously and have accidents?

  Sunflower Ph1 172
That's why I posted up all of my insurance relevant details, to give as clear of a picture as possible. Comparing two differnet people, in different postcodes etc. is never going to be completey representative.

Granted though, figures are calculated on statistical risks + ignorance on the buyers part that they are getting a good deal. The potential savings to a buyer on receiving a quote based on their own circumstances entirely would be wiped out by the costs of gaining all the information (character references for example). It would slow the whole process down.

However, it's mostly a con on hte whole. For example, why is there such a thing as an excess? Insurance should be just that, it should cover the cost of everything. You shouldn't have to pay for insurance, and then have to pay more just to actually use it when you do have an accident.

Everyone feels hard done by with insurance, because it doesn't feel like you are gettin anything for your money. Coupled with the fact that it's a legal requirement allows insurance companies to charge whatever they like. There may be some competition, but I would place a big bet that it's not completely fair competition. (but of course I'd have to asses the risk first).

Why? Because statistically you are more likely to have a claim if you are in the younger age bracket, there is no getting away from that. That is another discussion, the point I was making is that it would be unfair to offer the same premium for someone with convictions on their licence against someone who does not have convictions.

Precisely. Just as it's unfair to give someone a higher premium because other people their age like to crash their cars. We're not disagreeing with you on that front. We're disagreeing with you because you said that insurance premiums are based on the risk YOU as an individual not in relation to anyone else pose, which is completely wrong as it's all based on statistics, not on you personally.

Have you tried Admiral Multicar?

This is where you have "one policy" for all the households cars, all the paperwork gets sent to one person, all the money comes off of one credit card, one renewal date for the whole lot, etc. But, importantly, each car is treated separately. Each car has it's own policy holder, own named drivers, own insurance certificate, own NCB, etc.

So for my 182 on the family's multicar policy, with me (21yo Student) as the policy holder/main driver and my parents as named drivers, it's £750.

Thread here when I first discovered Admiral Multicar back when I was 19 with a Saxo VTR - took my £1565 quote down to £750.

Fatal flaw with that is the I don't have a second car in my household. The other vehicle is covered by commercial insurance.

Quick update on this... renewal time is due again in less than a month.

4 years no claims this time around.

Bit of a turnaround since last year, with greenlight coming in with a fantastic quote, not had a chance to try some of the other usual suspects yet.

Brentacre: Awaiting renewal

Greenlight: £674.18 (fully comp)

Adrian Flux: Couldn't provide a competitive quote

...more to come

(if anyone has any companies worth a try then feel free to suggest)

EDIT: LOL NVM. TIME/DATE FAIL.

Still, some points might be useful. In your OP you didn't mention:

* Named drivers (I'm assuming you do have them on your policy)
* Pay in a lump sum (doesn't suit everyone, but it's a financial no-brainer)
* Being very specific with your job
* Increasing market value beyond a threshold (e.g. I found a £3001 182 less to insure than a £1999 172 - the statistics saying average Joe is likely to take more care of a car worth a substantial (needless to say up to a point) chunk of money)

I didn't realise that, will be sure to give it a go. Got a few other companies to try yet.

ah cheers, will give that a read and try some of the others.

Good article there mate :)

I never understand why people dont haggle... I spend my life doing it over the phone so maybe its instinctive to me. But you should always ask the question!!

Me too, always go back and forth with quotes. A few years ago I got my renewal down by £500 just for getting a better quote from another company and showing my current insurer.

Gave Sky Insurance another go, but no luck again this year. Due to my postcode they were coming back with very high quotes.

Brentacre: Awaiting renewal

Greenlight: £674.18 (fully comp)

Adrian Flux: 'Couldn't provide a competitive quote'

Sky Insurance: ~£2,600 (underwriter doesn't like my postcode for my age catagory)

Glad we are currently winning mate, our policy will also offer you track cover ona daily basis if needed and replace your mods on a like for like basis.

If you thought you could reduce your annual mileage it may even help get the price lower for you.

Feel free to get in touch if you want me to take a look.

Cheers Neil, just awaiting my renewal and then I'll probably be back in touch. Brentacre have told me it'll be with me in a few days.

Postcode makes a massive difference with the last couple of places i've lived

''North'' HD3 = £2300 (approx) 27 with 5 years no claims

''South'' PL5 = £437 (approx) 27 with 5 years no claims (Hasn't improved over the last 2 renewals)

Big difference especially as north address is better than south :S

For some reason the WA postcode is considered terrible for insurance claims.

Could be loads of reasons why

Theft
Arson

Just depends on areas around you as well, if they are bad i'm sure that will account for such a steep price. Try putting your mileage lower for starters (if thats possible) then if you can get a short bus journey or walk/lift to work then change to social only.
If you can do either of them i'm 100% sure the price will drop quite drastically.
Wgere do you keep the car over night if you don't mind me asking?

Car is kept on my drive, and there is no chance I'm getting the peasant wagon to work again.

WA isnt that bad for us mate, there are some sectors that are hard to cover but your postcode is fine.

Also the HD3 mentioned above isnt that bad either.
