Oil light..

Car  Clio 172
On the way to work yesterday my oil light came on, so I took a detour back to my house to put the last of my oil in. Was the 10w40 I think from my VTR, was only a litre or so just to put my mind at rest whilst driving to work, and the light was a bit intermittent on the journey there, but completely stayed off on the way home but I still went and bought 2 Litres of the correct oil 5w40? The light stayed off all last night.

But on the way to work this morning it came on again?! Surely this cant be due to lack of oil. opinions?

Have you checked the level on the dipstick , you don't want to be driving it AT ALL whilst the oil light is on !!

Also.. it says 'Oil ok' and light is off upon ignition and after driving for a couple of mins the light will flash on, then go off after 10 secs then stay on for rest of journey.

Not sure if i am being dumb or blind but where is the dipstick?!

Check it when the engine is cold,if you have poured far too much in you would be wise to take a bit out or you will end up blowing seals etc

5.1Litres but if the sensor is faulty have you not just piled another 3litres in?? it is only a litre between min and max so i would say it is over filled too.

With anything oil related, you always check the dipstick for the level. Never ever ever trust the electronics.

You'll be very lucky if you've not done anything serious.

Okay cheers.. How do you get oil back out? Don't fancy sucking on a hose pipe!

3 options.
1.Drain the oil out and top up with 5 litres of new oil.
2.Spend £60 on a pump to pump the excess oil out of the sump.
3. Take it to a garage.

I'd recommend option 3

I have went and checked dipstick, it isnt oozing out but is pretty high! Trying to get hold of my mechanic to see if I can pop in to get him to check it on the way home!

Your engine has 8 litres of oil in now? Lol

honestly, you should make a point of regulaly checking oil/coolant, even at least once a month. I have owned by 182 since 2008 and it never uses any oil but i still check at least every week/2 weeks. I probably top up coolant by 1-2cm every few months.

Yeah I know, Only out of curiosity did I post it up again as the oil light came on this morning. I will get this sorted and in the near future sort out the oil sensor if that is what is at fault !

Just seen your post on saxp mate, good job you didnt fill it until it came out of the filler cap
