E92 M3 Silverstone Blue Comp

So the Z4 was somewhat short lived (though still here & for sale).

Decided that with the low mileage I do these days I’d treat myself to a car I’ve pined after for so long. Viewed a few dogs as I’m in the lower end of the market, was close to buying one which needed a bit of work, but randomly thought I’d check Facebook marketplace so borrowed the other half’s phone as I don’t have it, saw a pretty poor advert for local M3, well priced but a little chavy so wasn’t sure. Thought I’d give it a chance and call the seller and get a feel for them. Turned out to be a really nice posh bloke and could tell immediately he absolutely loves cars (has an E46 M3 & old Jag still) so made the trip and put a deposit down!

I’m really not a fan of the alloys but can get them refurbished so tried not to let it put me off.

First up was this monstrosity.

Then it was this…

To this

I’m not sold on the rear carbon spoiler and front splitters. Going to wait and see how it looks once the alloys are silver (as close to OEM finish as possible).

The interior & exterior are really tidy, a few minor imperfections I’ll look at over the years, but most importantly it has great service history and the throttle actuators have both been rebuilt with lifetime warranty, as well as the rod bearings about 5k ago.

I’m absolutely over the moon. It feels a lot more special to drive than my E46 M3s did.
IMG_0505.jpeg

It also has a mega spec, pretty much everything I wanted! The comfort access has already been coded out too which is a big bonus. It even has rear folding seats!
IMG_0506.jpeg

Todays task was fitting the Mr12volt unit, works in place of the CD changer and gives you wireless apple carplay/android auto.

IMG_0530.jpeg

Really modernises the interior, very happy with it.

Also cleaned a few bits, all the sills with gummi pflege, cleared the muck from the run offs, removed and clean the rear lights, and a quick pass over the exhaust.

IMG_0499.jpeg

The rear inner lights have faded and either need replacing or returning, unsure what to do. Quoted £45 per light to polish back etc or they’re about £140 odd new per side.

Awaiting a price to fix this rather annoying dent.

Lovely mate, my favourite shape M3 and the only one I've actually been in which sold the love for them!

When it comes to wheels... black is whack (n)

It's a no brainer. I had it done, all be it with the proper decats. A must for any e9x m3

What modstock backbox did you go for? I have an 1.75 or 1.5 and it’s perfect, so tempted by decats and a 1 or even standard!

What do you mean by proper decat? The resonated ones?

Did you rate the remap? Think that package and an eventuri will be all it needs to be the perfect all rounder.

Mine already had a modded backbox when i bought it so was unknown but we estimate its probably a 2. It is too loud tbh when booting it. Still love it.

I mean the actual decat pipe rather than a gutted cat. Slightly better flow.

Yes obviously he just loads the maps on, the actual maps have been written by one of the best in the UK, so are very good.
Remember you can sell your cats for good money too to help offset.

Cats are worth pennies these days to be fair, lucky to get 200 quid for a pair now

Decats, stock box and carbon plenum is the perfect noise imo

Crikey they've dropped in price!!
I got £800 for my standard centre section/cats back in 2022.

@JackD car looks sooo much better on the silver wheels. Absolutely lovely
Yeah I got 650 for my primary cats when I went decats, secondarys were worth about 180ea at the time as well

Whilst I decide whether I can hide a £1,000 upgrade during our house move, another little cheap upgrade to modernise the interior.

‘Induktiv’ wireless charger, means I can just chuck my phone in the centre console, auto connect carplay for Spotify & Waze and not arrive at my destination on 5% battery!

Mr12volt car play definitely gets my recommendation, just need to upload the BMW logo on startup and then it’ll be as near to OEM level integration as you can get.

Welcome to British summertime problems! It’s only on the nearside, haven’t ever noticed condensation before but it’s suddenly drenched today and the dipped beam isn’t working now…

Good old bmw headlights. I had this once on mine after I’d changed the bulbs and washed it. The cover wasn’t on properly so just let the moisture in

It used to happen on my Mrs GLC at 2 years old and Merc said it was normal in our climate. 🤣

So a quick look under the bumper and it seems one of the previous owners completely removed the under tray! So that’s probably why it was so unhappy with puddles…

Even though it’s dried out now, no dipped beam but the sidelights do work. Trying to figure out if it’s the ballast or bulb - would the ballast dying kill all the lights or just dipped?

IMG_0927.jpeg

One wet soggy ballast replaced. Also fitted the Pinnacle motorsport under tray which was a bit fiddly but having access to a 2 post lift made my life so much easier.

Actually enjoyed it so I’ll look to try and do bits on weekends myself, will be easier when I move house as it’s currently about an hour away from the unit but will end up being 20 minutes or so.

Want to send my headlights off to EM tuning for a freshen up at some point, unsure on refreshing the standard projectors or getting upgraded Hella G5s, but either way it’ll be new outer lens and PPF etc.

Also took my car to Munich Power for an update so it’s now running the latest anti-theft software, but that did wipe the GTS DCT flash so it’s now a little clunkier. Does make the modstock package even more desirable…

Spent a bit of money as there’s a few niggles which have been bothering me and I always end up fixing them when I sell the car, so I wanted to fix them early on and enjoy it for once.

My local BMW seem to match/beat the likes of Cotswolds etc so I ordered brand new rear inner lights, start/stop button, front roundel and a front number plate plinth. Last bits finally arrived from Germany so need to pick them up next week.

I couldn’t quite get on with the carbon spoiler which came on the car. Was just a bit too big and every modded BMW seems to have one (along with poorly spaced 5D plates). Picked up a used Silverstone II OEM spoiler for £60 so thought it’s worth a try.

The boot has a few marks so probably needs a respray, also a small scuff on the bumper so may look into that, not particularly fussed. Spoiler isn’t fixed on yet as I need to work out exact oem fitment.

Another thing irritating me was the obnoxious cold start. Looked into getting that removed, ended up just pulling the trigger with Modstock on their test pipe & map package. It’s definitely made the car a bit more lively, probably only back to roughly where the car should have been BHP from factory, but it’s a lot more urgent on the revs now. Sounds biblical under load.

Great work, spoiler looks so much better. They sound amazing with the test pipes/gutted cats and standard backbox combo. Only beaten by adding a carbon plenum 😉

Yeah I’m happy I made the correct choice reverting to standard. It’s on the list! I nearly bought a carbon airbox on cutters a month or so ago, just couldn’t get up there around work so missed out.

That's a beaut! Looks so good on those silver wheels.

That's some tight parallel parking though. Is it always parked on the road? Brave!

Unfortunately so, though I have sold up and will be moving soon and will finally have a driveway…...which is too small for my car 🙄 but will access to an underground car park so at least it’ll be under cover.

I absolutely love how it looks now. I am tempted to try and find someone to swap my rear privacy glass for non-tinted so it matches the front, but I’m not going to do much else aesthetically.

Nice 320d spoiler.
Yeah the modstock package makes a very good difference, it's a must on these imo.

I think you’ll find there’s more 320Ds out there with a carbon spoilers mate 😂 it’s all personal preference but I’m after a clean OEM+ look, such a good looking car to start with.

Yeah for the price and gains, it’s really worthwhile. MOT next month so we’ll see if it can actually pass with just the primaries!

It wont pass unless you have a good garage.

The non OEM bmw carbon lips look gash ad they are proper thick and don't even fit right, that's why. OE carbon one one is much nicer

Mine passed with primaries and 1.5 back box, just warm it up.
