Pointless expenses

What's your favourite pointless expense?

I noticed my car was running a little rough, so I replaced all my spark plugs and all my injectors, and every gasket used during that process

It still ran like s**t so I assumed it was either exhaust leak, collapsed catalytic converter, or lambda sensors. So I replaced/fixed all of the above and it now runs like a dream.

While I was thinking about the exhaust, I started imagining that my engine/gearbox mounts were absolutely fucked and had therefore caused an exhaust leak which was causing the poor running.

As yet I have not fitted the engine and gearbox mounts but they're my favourite purchases.

What are your favourite unnecessary purchases? Things that you thought would make a massive difference but in hindsight didn't, or you fixed the problem before fitting the parts you thought were at fault?

I totally didn't include diversions for roadworks, or getting lost while trying to find the hotel when I claimed expenses while working for Amazon 😬

Ha, the box of parts you'll definitely fit one day. Mine was a coil pack. Car was misfiring, I was convinced it was ignition, bought a full set plus leads without checking anything first. Turned out to be a knackered vacuum hose that had split underneath where you can't see it. Fifty pence of pipe fixed it. The coil pack has now been sat in the boot for two years going everywhere with me for no reason whatsoever. Also bought a fancy strut brace once purely because it looked good under the bonnet. Felt exactly the same to drive. Zero regrets though.
 
Famous Volvo/Focus driveshaft wobble. Got under the car, wiggled my driveshafts by hand, one was wobbly, other wasn't. Replaced the wobbly one.

It was the other one.

Or the time I bought a Focus RS clutch for it because it started slipping. Clutch was delivered... clutch stopped slipping.

For three f**king years
 
"worry free" delivery charge which is extra.

Absolutely boggles my mind that someone would pay extra for that service.

Hun if my parts arrive broken, I won't be worrying either way as if be doing a debit card / credit card charge back if you're getting arsey. See how you like that ya c**t
 
I just realised I've actually fitted the engine and gearbox mounts now. Feels exactly the same but at least the engine isn't on the piss any more 🤣
 
Chasing a vibration when braking on my touareg that doing my tits in. I hate any little rattles or vibrations.
It was under VW warranty so chanced my hand incase it was a bush or balljoint. They said warped discs, they were genuine and less than 18 months old so wasn't convinced and didnt splash out just yet. £3k quote

Got discs skimmed for £40 and new OEM pads for £60. Checked hub flanges for runout. Great improvement but still there a bit, thought maybe discs weren't 100% true so bit the bullet a few months later and got brembo discs & pads

Few months later and its back to what it was so went back in to overhaul N/S caliper as one boot was burst and guessed when Iv been doing pads iv been freeing up the pistons and hence why it returns after a period of time. Pistons still pushed back ok. 1 of the pistons was a bugger to remove, thought id found the culprit.

Still vibrating so thought maybe the pads been worn uneven with it sticking. New pads fitted.

Overhauled the O/S caliper as id bought a full kit anyway, new pads too. Still vibrating.

Only thing is another set of discs but I doubt a sticking caliper has caused warping / runout on the discs. Now got 3 sets of part worn pads.

Each time the vibration gets less but still bloody there

Was reading that getting happier that I was about to get a big clue about the wife's Crv. And then you left me hanging.

Why was it a £3k quote for new discs?! That's mental

Come back to this thread every so often and it still gets me.
