Usually they rust in the rear lower arches & rear sills from decades worth of road salt and dirt getting caught up behind the side skirt and arch liners, which people usually neglect to clean. I took my door cards off the other day to check inside the rear sills as they're notorious for rotting...
This guide should help you spot the difference between a standard 172 and a Cup, the main difference is the lack of ABS on the Cup:

Bloody hell that's so unfortunate, to go out like that is one of my biggest fears when working on a car by myself :( I parked next to him on the TurboRenault stand at Shelsley Walsh in 2021, he seemed like such a nice chap. Always enjoyed the posts of his multiple R26R's!
Sadly this will probably be more trouble than it's worth. Your best bet would be to get a pair of seats from a 197 or 200, they're built on the same platform as your car so should be a direct swap. I know this doesn't really help your current situation, but it might be easier in the long run!
I'd say your best bet is to find one with the least rust possible! Sadly the Phase 1's are prone to rot, so finding a clean one is getting harder. Thankfully mine lived the majority of its life down south, so never encountered the dreaded salt and grit we get up North in the winter.
It could also be a sign that your key is on the way out. For the first 6 months of my ownership, to start the car I had to hold down the lock button when turning the key in the ignition. Eventually it stopped recognising the key, and I had to take the car to Renault for a new key to be coded to...
Just out of interest, how highly do you the rate the roll centre kit on your car? I've been looking at them from time to time to try to cure some of the wandering I get when blasting down bumpy/cambered road. I'm interested to see if the gains from curing the wandering offset the increased...
It's pretty easy if nothing is rusted. Just make sure to jack up both sides of the car to enable you to move the anti roll bar into place without a massive struggle.
I was considering having them ceramic coated or using some kind of PPF to hopefully keep them pristine! Don't think I can stomach trying to find another good condition set in a few years time😬
Kam Racing have them in stock at the moment, bit pricier than RPD:

K-Tec do also offer them, but they're moving warehouse at the moment and changing their stocking system so it may take a little bit of...
I've already posted this on the Cliosport Facebook page but thought it would be worth posting here too.
Finally got around to installing some better condition headlights for the Phase1 last weekend. What a difference its made, makes the car look so much fresher. Wish I'd done it earlier!
Looks like I managed to nab the final full track day ticket last night, can't wait! This will be my first time on track in the Clio, I'm excited to see how it holds up!
No worries! If you pop the speaker cover off, there are some screws underneath (and some clips I think) to remove which then lets you take off the whole panel. You can then see down into the top of the sill, and fingers crossed there's no major corrosion!
I've got a 182 manifold on mine too, so I can share the pain 🤣 thankfully the phase1 gearing is slightly longer so it's not completely at max revs all day 😅
Ah well if it's three days then it's even better, you'll be perfectly fine with that mileage spread out. Just make sure your windows can open and you'll be reet!
I did 2000 miles around France last summer in mine with a decatted non-res K-Tec exhaust and no air-con on french motorways with a 80mph speed limit... I think that trip gave me tinnitus and took at least a year off my life but it's just about survivable 😅 I'm sure you'll manage the days travel!
Happy to see another Phase1 on here! If you're starting to notice some rust, it'll be worth taking the rear interior trim covers out and looking down into the sill to see if the rust has come through there. Also removing the side skirts is usually recommened as they can rust behind them as well...
I had a feeling it might be the case. K-TEC offer a servicing kit containing: "2 x replacement bearings - 2 x seal ring shims - 2 x retaining circlips" so it seems like I'll be able to open them up! I just didn't fancy pulling the coilovers to bits as I've never disassembled/assembled one before 😅
Hi folks, I’m looking for some Bilstein B14 suspension set-up advice!
I’ve recently fitted a low mileage second hand set of Bilstein B14’s with K-Tec solid top mounts (also second hand) to my Phase 1. Unfortunately I’m getting a lot of binding (pinging) from the springs at low speed cornering...
