Headed back down to Track n Road this morning with all the little problems fixed and had a pretty good morning getting the low speed stuff all sorted out.
All of a sudden the car jolts and Steve shouts for me to check the transmission while it coasted down.. I see a little wisp of smoke from...
OK, so.. Monday morning was the mapping session, which all started off very nicely.
I enjoyed this view all the way from MK to Track n Road in Rainham..
And then after an hour or so of fiddling to get the starting map sorted, the guys started to work on the low rpm / part throttle stuff...
Well it's going for its first track day next weekend, but we have an awful lot to get through on the day so won't be hoping for crowds! Once the car has been set up and shaken down the owner should be a bit more happy for people to come and see it.
Happy to say it's being mapped without the restrictor, so it'll be interesting to see what it makes. Original output was 185bhp then increased to 210bhp in 2006, so if ours had the later engine then it should make decent power! 210bhp will be absolutely plenty.
Weighed it this morning and it's...
Drop me a PM if you're interested.
The bellhousing was machined by Cutting Edge in Chelmsford. He's very good but understandably very very busy!
What he said! Stops you accidentally knocking it into neutral or reverse when slamming down through the gears.
GOOD NEWS! It's now up and running on the DTA and with zero hesitation. :beers:

The past few days have been a bloody nightmare.. I had problems with the throttle pot reading 60% when closed and the battery isolator malfunctioning, which have taken up 2 whole days to fix...
A quick update..
I started the week by making the DTA harness, which has turned out pretty nice.
Uses 100% OEM connectors, which I'm quite pleased about.
I'm also pretty happy to have found Spec 55 twisted & shielded cable by the ft at a very good price, so the whole lot cost £15...
With the utmost respect I don't think you really appreciate the challenge you'll face.. I had a Duratec literally under the windscreen of a 205 but even with everything else pretty much painted to the back of the car I still struggled to get past 50% weight distribution, and the space required...
You'll never get a V8 in the front of a hatchback and go RWD without having to seriously modify the firewall and floor.. I'd be surprised if you were left with any room for pedals tbh!
If your plan is to stick it in the back then that's a bit more realistic, but as someone who *just* managed to...
Hello again.. These 2 weeks have flown by!
I've spent a fair bit of that time planning to re-work the wiring for the DTA, which has been no simple task tbh. As I'm now ditching all the FR stuff it made no sense to keep everything as it was and work around, because working around a work-around...
It has a 35mm restrictor plate behind the throttle body and the air hose is 76mm ID, so it should be just fine!
The nice thing about running DTA is it can be mapped without the restrictor if 190bhp doesn't seem like enough. :tonguewink:
Nope! I've had the inlet off more times than I could count and have checked both sections of the manifold for potential leaks, as well as the plenum cover, sensor holes, and the throttle body. It's a mass-density system (in that there's no AFM, only throttle position, MAP, IAT) so not sensitive...
Just to add to the confusion: the engine apparently ran fine in the car before coming out. However, the cat brick in the manifold that was fitted was completely melted and rattling loose in the shell, and the Lambda sensor had also been damaged by it. That, coupled with the dead / dying...
I can't really comment on how much it has cost but the aim is to produce them for around the price of a similarly-equipped Caterham.
To update this.. the injectors made a small difference in that it was noticeably smoother, but it's still not running properly. When you stab the throttle it will...
Big news!
Here's how the car looked a couple of days ago.. pretty sad.. engine in bits.. tools everywhere.. oil everywhere.. chasing a problem which threatened to be a total nightmare but thankfully turned out to be relatively simple!
With that sorted I could get on with finishing the build...
It lives!
There's a 1cyl misfire that seems slightly more than just rebuild residues, so I need to investigate tomorrow, but it runs!
Oh also the majority of that noise is the floor vibrating as it's not fully secured just yet.
OK so actually it wasn't that the PRV was stuck open, it was completely missing! :fearscream:
The dodgy one (top) only has the spring fitted, no valve.. the bottom one is how it should look.
Got the pump rebuilt now with the best bits from the two spares I picked up, and had 4 Bar oil...
Found the problem.. PRV is stuck wide open! (Click for video)
Thankfully I know a guy close by with a spare pump, so hopefully I'll have it running later.
Update.. I went off and bought a mechanical dash gauge ILO buying a tester, and the short story is: zero oil pressure. It took me 3 mins of constant drilling on the pump pulley to get oil all the way up the capillary tube to remove all the air, then by the time I had screwed the gauge on the end...
Well, a small update.. I can't get hold of a pressure tester but I'm pretty sure the sender is faulty. I span the pump with a drill until oil gurgled back into the tank through the return and got the gauge up to 0.8Bar, but then it stayed there and didn't go back down. So I disconnected and...
Yeah you're probably right and it makes sense to have one. Any idea who would have one in stock? Seems most places are online only for stuff like that.
Yeah this is where it all gets confusing, because this is a relatively simple thing.
I wet the oil filter before fitting, but didn't fill it; when I started to undo the filter, oil seeped out all the way round the seal, which to me indicates oil is reaching the filter.
I also took the pressure...
So close to having an exciting update but I'm having some difficulty getting oil pressure! I'm not an engine expert so I've started a new thread in the tech forums so this doesn't get clogged up with replies - link below.

Hoping there might be someone who can help out with the Formula Renault engine in my project car, which is basically an F4R but with a Renault Sport dry sump. I came to starting it up today and first cranked the engine without plugs etc to build oil pressure, but ended up spending the whole...
