Last 2 heads I've taken in to have guides, the machinist has laughed his head off at how bad they were. One of them needed all new valves too as the stems were worn
Don't see many problems with them, but it happens sometimes. Poor condition of hangers and engine mounts will contribute. If you're grounding out at all then its not down to anything but that
Because racecar
Good engine, very light, well setup suspension, experienced driver. Its taken essentially 4 years to get it as competitive as it is. The learning process is a long one
I've done a PDR course earlier this year, it's pretty involved. There's some shocking examples of work out there, and some very good ones.
He's absolutely right that the headlining will need to be dropped and it can't be glue pulled (unless you are happy to pay for paint again if it were to...
So whilst I had the car here to sort out the broken sparkplug, I took the chance to put it on the rollers and see what was going on. Strong numbers, but the fueling on WOT was down into the 9s, the leanest point being 11.2:1 at around 4k. Not good for the engine or the lifespan of the oil.

Well a week or so ago I first attempt on the rollers and had to abort due to a knocking front pulley (looked like it was about to throw itself apart)
Had to order up a brand new one. Fitting involved using all the cam locking tools as if doing a cambelt.
Found this core plug hammer in too far...
I've only ever worked with schricks once, on a 172 cup. Car was quick but the cams were too damned expensive, and no better than other options.
ph1 head is best, 182 manifold is best. Rest of the engine is essentially the same so no need to worry about ECUs, just get it mapped
I know, don't worry I've been there and had to take a car off the road for a few months when circumstances changed, on more than one occasion. IT happens unfortunately. You'll be better off in the long run if you can manage without it for a short time :)
without wanting to sound condescending, if you can't afford to service it then you can't afford to run it. best to not use it until you can afford what needs doing
I agree. I only do them when they're noisy, and i've had 2 come back ever. I let them soak in the part washer for as long as I can and it seems to help extend their life by getting all the old crap oil out
I had one in this week, that had been done by a guy who builds massive power Mustangs and other muscle cars, drag cars, circuit racers, all sorts. He couldn't have got it more wrong. Shows that it doesn't matter how good you think you are, if you don't know these engines then you are back to day...
Re: dmallett's 421'd monaco
yeah that bucket seat.....What was the first thing you said when you got here last week? "That seat was a mistake" rings a bell
Seats were the OK bit. The buttons on the dash felt like they'd last a week before they pushed in and wouldn't spring back, or fell out completely. I think it might have made it worse that i sat in a 208 GTI first, and that is a place I really wanted to be
