I have a nose around MPB Photographic (and no, I don't work for them!) now and again, and I'm always amazed at how you can build a borderline professional set up for not much more than a top of the range compact or decent bridge camera.
Today for example, Nikon D50 + Nikon 300mm f4 + Nikon...
I love it, but I have made a small career out of similar shots! Shows a good sense of speed, which imo is very important with moving cars, especially ones that look like they should be going fast. The number plate is pin sharp, can't ask for more than that.
All the other cars are dark - the...
Completely different thing. As Pete has said, the variations in the image are the sun. Those images were picked up by loads of magazines and media outlets and have got some pretty good worldwide exposure (pun not intended), I think it's mighty impressive considering he used a coke can, and the...
I think we can safely say Josh2005 has won this round with this stunning shot...
I will get a new subject from him and hold that back for the next round proper, as before then I will do a 'Photo of the Year' thing.
Not cheap, and not cheap :)
Best all round wide angle (and it's incredibly wide at the widest end) would probably be the Sigma 10-20, about £300. You won't get anything cheaper than that and it's used by everyone from newbies to pros.
Not fisheye, but at 10mm it distorts nicely...
Sigma 70-300mm (it will say Macro, doesn't matter though), imo the best budget telephoto. Roughly £100 for the normal or £150 for the APO (slightly better glass)
Some piccies of my Nikon fit version (this was the even cheap non APO one) when I had one on my D50...
2.6kg, beast!
Very few people shoot with it handheld, but after a year with the 80-200 AF-S (1.6kg, hand held 6hrs a weekend solidly for about 6 months) I haven't even noticed it to be honest. It is heavy, but it's well balanced so if anything it makes panning etc much easier...and it's less...
'Basic' is my middle name :) I had a stopwatch going on my phone, ran upstairs every 5 minutes and took a shot manually. Managed to cook and eat dinner, wash up, watch 2 episodes of Friends and all of Top Gear during that time! Battery ran out at 9pm though which was a shame, the plant is...
Enjoyed this, shame the plant didn't seem too interested...need a better subject next time!

Shot over 3.5 hours (1 shot every 5 minutes) with my Nikon D90 and Nikon 50mm 1.8.
Nikon usually come out on top with the kit lens, slightly better quality than the Canon offerings but it's not going to be hugely noticeable.
Only issue is that the cheap Canon cameras are compatible with almost all lens out of the box, the D40/D40X/D60 won't autofocus with some lens (such as...
I think you're seeing things :) I wouldn't worry about things like Flickr when it comes to camera bodies, it's not really going to prove or disprove anything as you have the two key variables missing, operator and lens. I've seen many a rubbish photo with a Nikon D3, doesn't mean it's a crap...
Standard when just walking around for me would be...
- Centre Weighted Metering, then you get the option of how wide you want it on the D90, I go with 8mm as that covers a slightly larger area than standard.
- Dynamic Area AF (choose a point, but if the subject moves slightly outside of it...
£299, don't think there is cheaper way of getting 100mm of f2.8. They come up occasionally second hand on www.mpbphotographic.co.uk, I missed out on the one they had about a month ago, but my one cropped up the other evening (fully boxed, cased etc, as good as new) so I got in quick.
This...
Anyone who has experience of a 70-200 2.8 will know they aren't exactly small or light, but offer incredible quality. I absolutely loved mine, but only used it for Motorsport or Zoo trips as it was too big to carry around on holiday etc.
Today, however, I got the ultimate replacement...
Proportions are pretty similar for all the models iirc, so one looking cack and another looking good is probably just down to the angles we've seen, or the colour of the paint etc. The BMW looks like the most finished car based on the new regs, a lot of the new Honda pics are still of test mules...
Re: someph-ing different...........
Sweet, I recognise that location :)
Give us a shout if you ever want any company on a 'shoot', I haven't shot a car for over a year, withdrawal symptoms!
She gave them a call last night, got pissy and came away with the her same £20 tariff, a new phone for free (C702 - the one she wanted), had her monthly text allowance bumped up to 1000 (from 300), unlimited 02-02 calls and a load of extra minutes...result.
Conclusion: forget O2 shops, just...
Personally...
Not cheap, but it's a big lens to cover and £30 to keep £2.5k of equipment dry seemed reasonable. Probably the best accessory investment I've ever made.
You can make them yourself much cheaper, just get a nice thick plastic bag, an elastic band and do it Blue Peter style!
Anyone had any joy getting anything out of O2 lately? Better half’s contract is up for renewal but the tariffs have changed since she signed up, essentially now she would get less than she had before (£20 contract) but would have to pay an extra £5 for the privilege. Armed with the latest...
Will give that a go then, so winner of this round can choose a subject that will kickstart 2009. Then I will start a 'best of 2008' post, winner for that gets nothing but praise :)
