Agreed, sounds like an air leak. Can be tricky to sort as rubber hoses will soften as the engine warms up so more likely to leak when cold I think?

This guy makes a lot of sense. You need to be consider all the potential causes, coil pack could be fine but won't fire if it doesn't know where the engine is and for this it needs a trigger signal from the ECU which needs cam and crank sensor signals, or it might not be getting a power supply...

yea well some cars have ABS and not ESP but I can't find an ESP button. funny cos I swear I heard a beep followed by a bit of a twitch once. probably just the CD player beeping, it seems to do that a lot. Where would the ESP button normally be in a 172? Next to the light level.. uhm.. turny thing?
