Bit surreal this, they close the entrance to Longleat House and turn it into a Hillclimb for the weekend. Great fun and very very popular (full turn-out of 150 competitors today, another 150 tomorrow)
Was stupidly windy which meant photos were a little challenging, but here goes...
Not me, I have a second-hand Nikon D50 (£100), I do have two very nice lenses (Nikon 80-200mm and Nikon 300mm) but they were both also second hand and well under half price (about £400 each)
The 10-20 with a Polarizer is great fun...good luck ;)
At 10mm you've got to find the exact angle for the sky not to go really weird, polarizers simply can't handle such a wide field of view...
20mm is fine though, you shouldn't have any problems there.
I'm enjoying a hobby I can't afford, got to make sacrifices along the way :) Pretty sure I got the 52 and 77 for about £30 in total.
Trust me if I could have found second-hand ones I would have bought them instead. Sure if I had a D3 it would be silly to stick a cheap bit of glass in front of...
I use the Green Box Hoya ones, got a 77mm and 52mm and they work really well, iirc they didn't cost much, particuarly considering I needed a 77mm one.
On the sea to cut out the reflections:
On the sky to darken it up (this shot would have been impossible without one):
and works...
The shot above proves exactly why Silverstone is pretty useless for photography. I shot this almost identical moment from the public areas of Thruxton with just 195mm...
At a 'normal' circuit you can usually get away with much shorter focal lengths, that means it's easier to pan...
Goodwood is pretty easy as it's got great photographic options, for 'coming towards you' shots try 1/320 whilst still remembering to pan the camera, for completely side-on panning shots try 1/200. Both of those should get you some safe shots with a bit of movement in them.
Can't help with...
I wouldn't have too many complaints with those for a newbie to be honest, particularly as you were shooting at Silverstone (along with Rockingham, easily one of the worst circuits in the UK for photography)
People don't like to hear this as they like instant results, but it's all down to...
As with Nick, just a gallery, pretty much every photo I've ever taken on here, looking at the stats: 6847 photos, takes a reasonable hammering as well, 10GB of bandwith used last month including 300 original file downloads and just over 111,000 photo views. Not bad for £2.50 a month...
The Olympus one off the advert for sure ('850SW' iirc), it got reviewed in Practical Photography this month and they loved it, great picture quality as well.
Apparently there are vids on Youtube of people dropping them in swimming pools and it still being fine.
Clockwise from the Paddock...
Folly
Avon Rise
Quarry (mental)
Esses
Old Paddock
Hammerdown

Bobbies
Westway
Esses and Bobbies are ok but you are quite high up, not great for photos. Quarry is by far the best spot, and you get loads and loads...
I think you would be pretty appalled at just how many photos I take using P (Program) Mode!...although I hate AUTO, which adjusts ISO and other stuff.
Away from Motorsport and a few other specialist things where I really experiment, I'm as lazy as it gets. I will always remember winning a...
"Motion"
Here goes again. Vote will be open until Friday so then we can get a comp running from the start of the weekend.
Please select the number of the photograph and select it in the poll when it magically appears.

Too noisy, 4 local NIMBYs complained and as a result it was game over for any major events (British Touring Cars, British F3 / GT etc) at Combe and has been ever since.
The Ginetta G50s are superb machines, look like good fun on track and certainly very popular already.
Great set anyhow, love the Lambo sandwich, I rarely get shots like that as I generally only attend qualifying days.
Yep, fully aware of that, I like to break the 'rules' though and I find that my really slow shutter speed shots can often look better with it leaving the frame. I tried plenty with them entering the frame and it doesn't work as well.
Quite similar to this, which has been quite popular despite...
I sort of kept an eye out but wasn't sure on a few occasions. I did park behind you though, and as I was entering the circuit there was a guy on the phone who said "hi it's Jamie" but I assumed that would be too lucky to bump into you at the gate!
Dragged my ass down to this even though I only got in a few hours earlier from seeing Mark Ronson and Calvin Harris the night before. Was worth it, anyhow, haven't seen the British GTs for 2 or 3 years now since they got banned from Castle Combe...
