I think its an upgrade, it may not be a huge upgrade but I can now have access to lots more AF lenses. Plus the following are useful to me: Live view, dedicated ISO button, 9 point focus and a few other bits and bobs!

Don't be fooled by the MP and stay well away from that GE!!! Canon A590is is under £100 http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00131MUWQ/?tag=cliospnet01-21 4x zoom and IS - better than the 580 you mentioned too!

For the price, you cant go wrong.. plus 2 year warranty is good for peace of mind.

Revels - f1.4 is were its at! Plus... its got AF-S so it will be super quick at AF and work on my trusty D40, plusts a completely new lens with 9 rounded aperture blades - quality should be awesome!
