My other halfs sister has a sony DSLR with 18-70 and 70-300 lenses.
Its out of warranty but the 18-70 has jammed at 18mm, she took it to Jessops and they wanted £35 just to look at it, which is non refundable!
Are there any places you can send off faulty lenses too for repair that don't...
I hate seeing amazing pictures that blow me away to only find out they have been taken by the kit lens... and end up think how the f**k lol!
As DK said, any SLR.. bar a few Turkeys will be much better than any P&S or Bridge Camera. The good thing about them and the glass, is that they...
My equipment will always be better than me lol!
AF-S does not refer to the size.. well.. in Nikon is does not anyway!!
AF = motor inside camera body
AF-I = Motor inside lens
AF-S = Silent Wave Motor
HSM (Sigma Lenses) = Hyper Sonic Motor (lens originates form Star Trek lol)
As for Nikon...
I think people get caught up thinking that just because its Canon, its better. Which (IMO of course) is not true!
Through experience of using both Nikons and Canons I have chosen Nikon.
Prehaps DK has not mastered the use of a superior Nikon eh? ;) ;)
And as or lenses, there is a huge range...
I tried out the SB-600 and decided on keeping the 400.
SB-600 is more powerful, more on flash adjustments such as zoom etc, its head can be tilted as well as bounced. Its fairly bulky on the D40 but usable.
I still use the SB-400 and its good enough for my needs, small, light, powerful enough...
My advice is use the kit lens for a bit, you will then get an idea of what you like taking pics of the most, what focal lengths you need etc, then upgrade from there! The 55-200 VR is a great addition to any Nikon bag - light, small, VR and good IQ.
I would go with the D60, as ukaskew mentioned, the Canon has a lot of cheaper glass, but having used the 450D and 50mm 1.8 I wouldn't say go for the canon just for that. After using it for a bit I found it slow and noisy and was a bit disappointed with the pics.
I have found the 18-55 VR better...
Depends on your needs really, sb-600 is good.. does all you need, but the sb-400 is a nice compact little flash which you can get for under 100 notes which does a really good job to be honet!
I have used the 300D for indoor shots under medium - poor lighting and had to push the iso up to 800 to get acceptable results. To be honest, if you wanting this site to look pro, then the pics need to be up to scratch!!
I think standard kit lens and indoor action shots just wont work, but...
For 23k I would expect it to be quick.. good read here:

The Focus is going to have to be pretty damn quick to beat the megane!
That's because there is no conclusive result!!
Your best bet is to go to a local camera shop and try the D40/D60/1000D and see what you like the best.
I choose Nikon, I briefly flirted with Canon, but came straight back to Nikon.. others prefer canon!
D40/D60, your not really limited by new lenses, Sigma & Tamron now do a wide range of lenses that will work along with the AF-S Nikon Lenses.
You can get a D60 from Jessops with the 18-55VR lens for £330 with £30 cash back which means its in your budget!
I would also say D700 if you want full frame. Or get a D90 and some serious glass and you will be just fine for weddings and venues.
Even the D40/D60 can do venues and weddings with the right glass, just check flickr for examples!
But with the D700 & D90 you open yourself up to a lot more...
Rip off!!! Its only £329 at jessops!!

Then £30 cash back!
Had a G9 and got bored after a week! Very limited IMO, moved on to an SLR very quickly and don't feel like an idiot when using it??! I found the G9 very limited, shocking in low light, lots of noise at higher ISO, limited zoom, lack of decent DOF, poor flash (although you can buy speedlights...

You can compare 3 models at one time such as 3 entry level models:
http://www.dxomark.com/index.php/eng/Image-Quality-Database/Compare-cameras/(appareil1)/196|0/(appareil2)/186|0/(appareil3)/216|0/(onglet)/0/(brand)/Nikon/(brand2)/Canon/(brand3)/Sony
or 3 of the newest...
For animal close ups etc you will probably want more than 200, sigma do a 70-300 APO that with AF with the D40, the trouble is neither have any image stabilizer, which is not a big deal in good light or with a tripod.
The Nikon 70-300 VR has good reviews but is twice the price.
If you do feel...
