I hate to say it, but I had EXACTLY the same issue on a 182 years ago.
eventually we traced it to a damaged loom. The bit where it goes through the bulkhead. Every now and again a chafed wire would either earth out on the bulkhead or spike on one of the other damaged wires.

Injectors fitted were the ones that were in my van.
I acquired a set of brand new ones so fitted them to my van last year and the ones that were already on it went in my mates toolbox for spares. They then went in your Cup when the original ones started playing silly buggers.

Went out and did a few ‘tepid’ laps to clean up the brakes and tyres, came in and adjusted the pressures, then proceeded to what felt like a million laps, it was empty there!

My Ph1 dials (in a 182 converted Mk1) did this and it was my gearbox earth strap. It actually did it again this morning I need to buy a new one.
but I undo it, quick flash with a wire brush and back in and it’s golden. Worth a shot.
I do have a spare set of Ph1 clocks if you want to try them?
You say it’s worse in the boot, Have you tried taking out the boot mat and all the trims? Put them all in the garage and if the smell goes, there’s your culprit?

If he was ‘that’ type of person, he’s better off selling it to someone he knows for a reasonable amount.
