So can you see a big scratch on the lens or not? If its just in the VF it could be a hair, get a rocket blower in there and try and shift it. To try and show up the scratch try shooting at f/22 or smaller.

Its popular because its cheap on most systems,(the 50mm f/1.8) and provides a massive aperture for little money! If your shooting Canon the f/1.8 is good for the money, if your shooting Nikon I'd rather get the 35mm af-s as mentioned above...
