So can you see a big scratch on the lens or not? If its just in the VF it could be a hair, get a rocket blower in there and try and shift it.
To try and show up the scratch try shooting at f/22 or smaller.

Its popular because its cheap on most systems,(the 50mm f/1.8) and provides a massive aperture for little money!
If your shooting Canon the f/1.8 is good for the money, if your shooting Nikon I'd rather get the 35mm af-s as mentioned above...
Unless you plan on taking a tripod and doing lots of fiddling for landscape shots then no, I wouldn't bother with any more personally.
If you do then Jessops sell the Coking slot in filter system, useful for using gradual Neutral Density filters ...
If you purchased your gear before the price rises do it, you should get what you paid fairly easily or take little loss. If you can live with one lens then go for it, had similar thoughts to sell everything and pick up an older 5D. Saying that I'd only jump at full frame if I could get some...
