Today I have mainly sworn at all three cars and threatened to burn them, especially after spending money to put the 182 through the MOT for the handbrake cable to snap during the test. I did change the wipers and sidelights myself though :unamused:
So this weekend I finally got round to starting things with the 172.
The rear part of the interior was stripped out, I collected my track wheels from the parents' house and I readied it for being picked up by the garage. Had to pump a couple of tyres up, free the brakes off etc.

Actually I should add that the Cup 172 dampers are different to your current ones for the front but the rears are the same on both versions. If you want to go for better rears you need 182 Cup rears (182 Cup fronts don't fit your car though).
Yeah 172 Cup dampers are a straight swap for your on a Ph1 and cheap at about £45 per corner. If there's issues with the brakes then push them up the list of priorities. Tyres do make a huge difference as well.
I'd leave the brakes for now (assuming they're relatively new and you're not cooking them) and go for 172 Cup shocks and a Whiteline ARB if you're wanting to do it cheap. Then I'd look at tyres once the suspension is sorted and next up the brakes.
I have a 124k mile 172 (recently undergoing a track build) and a 60k mile 182 Cup (literally hit 60k two days ago) and the 172 is comfortably quicker. These engines seem to like miles. History is a big thing though.
Got to say that I've had a motor factor supplied shaft for my 172 that was absolutely fine. Just make sure you count the number of teeth on the one you take off (assuming it's an ABS car). It's stood up to track use so far as well. No issue with the length.
I didn't find it easy insuring the 330i. Adrian Flux came up comfortably the cheapest, they knocked £100 off the next cheapest which was Swiftcover. I'd just had a total loss due to fire, my postcode isn't the best and it was £580 fully comp with protected no claims and the wife on the policy.
Update on the barge -
It was the expansion tank, Tom 1 - Green Flag 0.
Now I know why it went with such a bang!
It's had a new radiator and thermostat recently which is good news, the expansion tank looked a little older and was a non-genuine. The pal who's fixing it has seen a few like...
I'm not a fan of the amber either, but other than that it's a nice car. Does the filter sound that much better than standard? Have a spare cone filter I've been debating throwing on mine to see what the noise is like.
I've PM'd you but for anyone else that finds the thread I was told it was an M20 washer but unsure on the required thickness. I used a washer I found lying around that worked ok.
Oh and @DanielJames, I'd recommend having your cooling system checked out whenever it next gets near a garage. I'd heard they were a weak point and found out the awkward way today when either my expansion tank or radiator exploded while stationary (not had it on the ramp yet). Not the biggest or...
I agree, been looking at stuff for months and it's ambiguous to say the least. May have been a different engine you looked at, some are lower. There are guidelines I've seen saying don't go beyond the weight of the car with the trailer but I understood the legal limit to be the manufacturer's...
I can't find any mention of that on the legalities online via www.gov.uk. This is all it spits out:
"Licences held from 1 January 1997
If you passed your driving test after 1 January 1997 and have an ordinary category B (car) licence, you can:
drive a vehicle up to 3.5 tonnes or 3,500kg MAM...
Very nice, I've gone for an E46 330i Saloon for towing the Clio. Nowhere near as nice as yours mind, settled for an SE auto with leather and xenons due to budget. Much prefer the touring and sport.
What's your take on the towing licence though, so long as you keep your train weight under...
172 & 330i -
So I went ahead and booked a track day at Oulton for 31st March. Gave me a target to get the Clio ready for. I've done little with the 172 after the money I'd spent on the 182 with belts and all. Managed to put some money aside to sort the "need to do" bits out, namely the ABS...
