The D40 can only auto focus with AF-S lenses, luckily Sigma HSM lenses work so you won't be that resricted, heres a nice long list of lenses that work. (its an old list, probably more now.)

I'd say...
If I used em I'd Buy UV filters from the highly rated Hong Kong stores and you'll save a mint on the Hoya Digital Coated Pro filters etc.
In my opinion you don't need one but most my lenses have big f*** off hoods...
Just started to use the following...

If you don't get that Manfrotto, as said the Velbon 250R is decent, I trust it enough to let the waves wrap around the legs on coastal shoots.
Rallye-Joe : AFAIK there is a universal screw size, so I'd say yes.
Can only guess but it should be so much better than a plastic jessops tripod. Holds upto 2.5KG which is decent and you can get it cheaper here and says ''case included''...

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!! Mate borrowed my Jessops tripod I stupidly bought and his SLR face planted into some pebles :S
Cheap plastic, not sturdy, replaced mine with a Sherpa 250R, you can remove the head but I've never bothered, it can hold my 350D + 70-200 F4 + 430EX flash. Got...
A boring read and something I've never bothered to do but shoot to the right if your happy to spend time shooting RAW and want to reduce noise...

28 f/1.8 USM and 85 f/1.8 USM always found nifty to long or two short, have today completed my lens addicti..sorry collection..until next week anyway...
AKAIK Canon doesn't have international warranty on its bodies. Not sure about Nikon.
If he goes Canon tell him to pick up a 50 f/1.8 whilst there, dirty cheap.
Looks like a very decent camera, love the fact you can strap a massive flash on top for comedy out of proportion value. The manual controls should be good and you can shoot in RAW.
At the same time, I wouldn't rule out the S5 IS but depends on your needs, how much you want to use zoom for...
In lamens terms, its like the iris of your eye, opens and closes to allow for more or less light and in photography gives the shooter control over depth of field..

Have a search on http://photography-on-the.net/forum/index.php most people highly rate it as a budget lens..
Image archive, the Canon doesn't have an archive thread...
Since his dad has a D80, stick with Nikon.
If his dad has loads of AF lenses then consider the D50 or D70s, he might prefer these as they alre also bigger. If he has AF-S lenses then go for the D40x, looking at prices, its £64 difference. If you can't decide, flip a coin, it won't make that...
182chick you'll be wasting yout time picking the camera on user images on the web, that'll come down to user skill, post processing and lenses.
If your mr is going to stick with the kit lens for a long while its not really going to matter. If he however gets an addication for fast prime lenses...
I hear the newly announced 200mm f/2.0 IS USM should be a cracker ;)
Be careful with ebay as if the bodies are imported from HK/US way you don't get international warranty with Canon AFAIK. Check if its sellers warranty or Canon warranty.
Lens choices are endless depending on shooting...
Recently started using eMule, seems much much better than limewire, has many much harder to find tracks, although downloads can be slow with big ques but if you leave it running you get there in the end...
