Clio 182 sport dephaser and timming belt change

If the engine wasn't in the car I dare say it would be relatively straight forward.

Cambelt, not a question, just a statement

You need specifically a tool to lock the camshafts, a tool to lock the pulleys and a tool to lock the crankshaft, you also need 16mm and 18mm spanners instead of the 15, 17, and 19 more commonly used in my experience. You also have to take half the car to bits to get to the belt etc.

Cambelt, not a question, just a statement

Havent finished yet, just starting to put components back on, I have no doubt I will finish it, but no room to get spanners/torque wrench on, forever jacking engine up/down to get to different bolts, ridiculous.

Cambelt, not a question, just a statement

Being halfway through attempting my cambelt/dephaser change, I would not do this on someone elses car for £500. A real c*** job.

    cambelt advice please

Yeah, I was quite happy that the crank was in the right place until I saw the bit in the manual, thanks for all your advice.

    cambelt advice please

Got the crank pin in, and the horseshoe, put on pulley locks and have loosened everything and removed bottom pulley. In the manual it says the slot in the end of the crank (presumably means the keyway) should be in line with the engine centreline, while its hard to be exact I think its more in...

lump of iron? bolted to the body just under/infront of top engine mount

Yeah I will, looks heavy enough to slow the car down.

    Whiteline Rear ARB

For road use on a phase 1, I thought I noticed a difference when I fitted it but didn't notice any difference when I removed it.

lump of iron? bolted to the body just under/infront of top engine mount

As title, what is it and whats it for? thanks

    Braided lines for daily car?

I fit them because I think they look better, but honestly felt no difference with road use.

How to get a bit more torque out of my 172??

They do work quite well but are a poor design for a high revving performance engine, although that long stroke may help the torque figure.

    changing cambelt

As stated, I could see that the wing had been repaired here already so it wasn't going back on.

    changing cambelt

Not an issue, ive done it before, the wheel/tyre actually fills the arch much better and dosnt disappear like it does in the sport arch.

    changing cambelt

Oh right, no I have all the parts (Wolverhampton) including tools , just very disappointed it took me so long to get to the stage where im ready to use them. 12 hour shifts now mean it will have to wait till next week before I can **** it all up.

    changing cambelt

No I am not going to replace the wing, I have never really liked the sport body kit, going to replace it all with non sport wings/front panel, which I much prefer. Only trouble is all the holes that get left in the sills, and I cant afford to get panels resprayed so will be all colours for now.

    changing cambelt

Yeah I remember you, clio was alright, is alright but it wont look so good soon.

    changing cambelt

Itll never be a nice car, but what can I replace it with for the money, probably worth £500 once/if I get it done but I wouldn't sell it for that, so I may as well keep it and modify it. All my cars get modified.

    changing cambelt

There you go, although hitting it didn't do this, I saw once the front panel was removed that the front of the wing had been repaired previously, so I had no intention of leaving it on.

    changing cambelt

@105e - The additional cog is for different pulleys - Renault updated the tool so don't panick about it. Thank you.

    changing cambelt

Right now ive cooled down a bit, one thing that I don't understand is what is the 3rd cogged wheel for that comes with the Renault tools, if someone could please explain.

    changing cambelt

Whacked it with a hammer. Think its now time to just shut the bonnet, send the tax back and let it rot, totally fed up with it.

    changing cambelt

Yeah, mount is completely of, as are all the aircon pipes (didnt work anyway and I plan to fit the pure delete kit) Finally got the bolt out but I did take my frustation out on the wing, ( another wing now required, better than the windscreen)

    changing cambelt

An hour later and I just cannot get a spanner on one of the bolts on the bottom cover.

    changing cambelt

Yeah bumpers of, arch liner, inlet manifold, headlight, top cambelt cover, just trying to remove the bottom one.

    changing cambelt

Five years since cambelt last done so thought I should get it changed. Couldn't justify paying someone or afford to really, so decided to have a go myself. Not a novice have done other cars, but this is ridiculous, haven't even started on the belt yet, got bits all over the place, no room in...

    Was it worth it?

Not too bad really, could have paid £1200 and still had to replace most of those parts.

    love hate clio

When im driving my 172 I love it, when it comes to doing any work on it I hate it, with a vengeance.

    camshaft plugs, gear box side

How do these come out?, tried piercing with with a sharp screw driver and broke it, bit wary of using big screw driver, thanks. A while later, now tried a big screw driver but despite tearing it, it still dosnt want to come out.
