50mm will do fine. I'd get a flash, long sync cable (£10), basic light stand (£13 odd) and one of these bargain £25 softboxes: http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B004XY65WQ/?tag=cliospnet01-21
That should get you some fairly decent light without costing too much. Then get reading Strobist and Neil van...
Thanks James, good to meet you too!
Here's a bit of a "model without makeup" moment. One of the originals before editing. I didn't have the power of the lights high enough for this shot but it's amazing what detail you can recover (along with a few tricks to get the colour to pop!)...
Cheers guys!
Thanks! Good to meet you too!
Not the real plate sadly. Some people blur the plates or blank them, but I think this looks odd so I just change them to something else. Boffey with the AG 200 took his off which is why it's not in the pic.
Nicely lit! ;)
So glad I had them with me. Was a shame we got moved on but I think we did pretty well with where we were. Will have to bring the light painting lamp next time.
Had my lights with me for the Warrington NW photo meet on Thursday night. Just as well as it was a bit dark. Results seem OK though!

Been using 500px for a year or so, never really got much attention on there and I didn't resort to "Please check out my work" type comments on other people's photos, so I was a bit surprised when I uploaded this earlier today and it seemed to go down well:

Good call! I managed to get a bit of an interior from another exposure, it's a bit grainy up close but looks passable when at web size. I also redid the wheels, the back one is not perfect, even when pulling the shadows in the raw there just isn't enough light there.
I also tried to fix the...
If you do a single exposure two things happen which aren't ideal - more ambient light leaks in and you "overspill" light into areas you don't want to paint. You get more control with multiples but it takes longer and require more time in PS. These ones I'm doing multiples as I'm trying to get...
Here's last nights attempt.
Took an exposure with the headlights on and blended that in. Works quite well, and being a separate layer it's simple to adjust the intensity of the headlights.
Still some messy streaks and it's a bit dark overall but I reckon once nailed, this method should be...
Sorry, the first shot isn't light painted - it's regular strobes and a single shot hence why it looks that way.
This was around dusk so not pitch black. I think I finished about 10pm and it still wasn't totally dark then.
I had another go last night which in some ways worked better but I still...
I should have mentioned that the strobe shot is a single regular exposure with all three firing at once. The LED one is multiples, around five at 5-10 seconds each.
Went out for some experimentation last night. Not a great location, just out of the way and close to home. First up, strobes. 3x Canon Speedlight 600s:
Then light painted with an LED video light:
It's a bit patchy in places and I had to clone a few bits where the light lines were too...
Cheers for the comments guys! :D
Exhaust, downpipe and 200 cell cat. Inlet here but needs painting before fitting. Filter and intercooler next, then Revo stage 2, 4+ later, then maybe 5, forged and hybrid if I can sell a kidney!
Deffo! Let me know when you're back and we'll get together. I'm...
I've got the 70-200 F2.8L II IS and a 2x II teleconverter and I've only used the tele a couple of times in the past year. Found that 200mm was enough for Oulton and Anglesey without media access. Done Silverstone a couple of times but had passes for those. Neither times I used it were for...
Just because it's a boring standard plate. I had CLIO ART on my 200 and that was in every pic. As you say its visible when you drive around, so no problem with it showing.
Once I find and buy a nice plate for this I'll stop doing it, but for now I think it looks a bit neater with fewer digits...
The logo says Fiesta Turbo because my site is www.fiestaturbo.com. It now covers all Fords, but I've retained the name as it's fairly well known. I should have mentioned this as it's a bit confusing.
The plate's been Photoshopped to remove the first and last digits to disguise it. This is...
Eibach springs on, got rid of the 4x4 ride height. Went out on Monday and snapped these, inspired by a certain site! ;)

No longer a Clio owner but still a camera owner and I still eat food so up for this if no-one minds a Blue Oval there?
If we have decent photo location I can bring all my gear, lights etc and we can make a proper go of it. :D
It's taken me a week to find the time to go through my BTCC Oulton pics from last week - I'm not that good at panning yet but rather than up the shutter speed I shoot low and rattle off hundreds just to get a few good ones. Filled 80GB of memory cards with 2400 pics!
The rest are here...

How's this for an on topic photo? X100 taken with a 5D with a Sigma 50mm 1.4
F4 as any wider open caused the wording around the lens to go out of focus. I find mine a bit soft at f1.4 but pin sharp at f2 or higher. Probably my most used lens.
Good point. Have you tried black bars top and bottom, cinema style, so you've got the same effect but the actual image file is of regular dimensions? Might work, might look terrible!
Really good! But... I'd avoid the strange widescreen crops, stick to 3x2 or 16x9. If it's a busy image I sometimes stick on a graduated filter in Lightroom bringing down the exposure top and bottom to draw attention to the center.
Still sorting mine now. Got 430 keepers but was experimenting...
Cheers guys!
Three Canon Speedlite 600EX-RTs with the ST-E3-RT transmitter. Work great - no need for line of sight, no cables and no messing with third party PocketWizards/Cybersyncs.
