Could try that, but if he is having troubles booting into windows he would be better with something like this.. http://www.memtest.org/#downiso just download the ISO on a different computer, burn it to cd and boot the laptop from the cd. it will run the memtest and report any faults.

Na, hard drives go that's normal (unfortunately)... it only takes a small amount of time to eliminate the obvious stuff.. Like, run a memtest etc. its not difficult as there are programs out there that will do it for you.. some BIOS's have a mem test built in aswell.

There's your problem. Ordinarily I would just leave it at that but... Worst case scenario your 'mate' did something like hit the ram with static or something. More likely it just windows being windows.. try a re-install and see if your still having problem.. could be a ton of things...
