Exactly, and I think thats the point they are missing, once it setup.. you never need to touch it again.. it just keeps on working..
no 6 monthly re-install cause its slowed down etc. No BSOD no viruses no spyware etc.
You haven't even tuned it for performance yet ! I spent about a day tuning a linux system.. boot time from loading screen to working console with mouse.... 7 seconds !
for future reference, ctrl+alt+F7 returns you to the GUI (assuming it is ofcourse started)
F1 to F6 (by default) are virtual (non graphical) terminals.
Like I said its easy to fix.. but your gonna need to be able to log into your own machine lol ! log into the text terminal and edit the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file as Simon mentioned, or install the proper binary from Nvidia by doing the following.
sudo apt-get install wget
wget...

Its quite frustrating as I can fix it in 2 seconds but to explain takes ages !
just a case of downloading driver from nvidia, droping to a terminal running the nvidia installed in sudo, letting it compile the module the restarting the GDM.
Just re-done the nvidia drivers on my system as i've just installed compiz fusion :D

PS. Gnome does look very plain initially.. just visit http://gnome-look.org or install compiz fusion after you setup your nvidia drivers for some serious...
Good job on the checksums.. now you know your download was perfect. Pitty 8x is the slowest but should be ok.
Ubuntu has an inbuilt disk checker you can use to verify the burn is OK also nero can do a data verification for you.

The 'problem' with Ubuntu, is it verifies itself at every step of the way, if there is any problems with your hardware... or the download of the ISO or even burning it to disk it WILL let you know !! why install a faulty program.

They could see where the connection is too, but all traffic is encrypted. I use my linux system at work to SSH into my home system and launch a web browser. All traffic/requests etc are tunnelled through the SSH connection and are therfor encrypted and unreadable even at the packet level.
