I've seen a gps 150 and it was scary in the Twingo, didn't take long to get up there either which is surprising given its relatively low power. I'm really tempted to try one of them top speed events next year to see what I can do in a "safe" environment.
Could be worth a bore scope to see if there's any piston contact, does sound like a knackered dephaser but usually that rattles at idle and disengages with oil pressure at/above 1800ish rpm. That's not to say they all fail the same way.
