The Power PC Thread [f*ck off consoles]

I think it depends how sensitive you to are to the changes in the image, some people seem to “see” it much more than others.

The 'I work in I.T' thread

You are absolutely right, and there’s nothing racist about it IMO. Some contractors from India who I’ve worked with in the past have been absolutely top notch, the equal of anyone. People pulled in to do lower end jobs can often have that awful culture of dishonesty through omission and never...

The 'I work in I.T' thread

I’m hoping for the best, but planning for the worst. If they come out and say they will be offshoring shared functions and first/second line support over time then I would respect that. If they don’t say that, then they’re most likely liars and I’m going to take my time to find something else...

The 'I work in I.T' thread

We have just been bought by a big private equity firm who have their own dedicated offshore unit in India. As expected it’s all very “don’t spook the staff” at the moment but big cuts are inevitable, it’s what I’d do in their shoes. Will be surprised if I still have a job in 12 months, but meh...

    RB 197 for £2khttps://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/1314741869531405/

Pretty clean MoT history too. Price is probably too low, automatically makes me suspicious it's a turd, but if it was local it would absolutely be worth a look.

    How much extra BHP ?

Maybe the old one had collapsed baffles or something, if it was really restricted for some reason then replacing it would make quite a big difference.

I would be honestly amazed if you didn't have some sort of cooler. I can't think of a desktop CPU in the last decade which didn't need some sort of additional cooling, even if it's just a passive heatsink.

The 'I work in I.T' thread

Many moons ago I worked for a company called Kerridge Commercial Systems, that sort of stuff was their core business although it was becoming part of a much bigger ERP product. They’re still going, and the software was solid, so might be worth a look to see if they still offer anything along...

My Merc e220 cdi - no reserve, starting price £1

Yeah, it didn't go very well. Sat at £810 for days and was expecting it to move at least a bit but hey ho, that's ebay. Someone got a bargain. Honestly it being gone is a win, it's just cluttering up the place now. Buyer says they're coming tomorrow to collect so hopefully it happens. Still a...

Brilliant conversation with my wife. It’s technically her car, so turns out she was looking forward to getting the money for it. I said that’s completely fine, as long as she buys herself her next car when the time comes that she can drive again. No? No. Didn’t think so 😂

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/326161557573 Not sure what’s worse, putting this on eBay or sharing the link with you bunch of wind up merchants 😀 In all seriousness though, please no funny messages or windups, my wife is not very well and I’ve got too much on my plate as it is 👍

Basically yes, except that you're probably always going to want some gas generation capacity to fill in on still days. We're in a great position to become a net exporter of energy and not be reliant on imported oil and gas. It should be one of our big economic strengths in future, even more so...

Sim Rigs - Let’s see yours

That’s annoying for anyone who bought hoping for that, it’s been out a while too. Personally I’m happy with the wheel it comes with, but if they want to build an ecosystem that’s not the way 🤷‍♂️

Seriously temped by this: https://www.logitechg.com/en-gb/products/driving/pro-racing-wheel.941-000196.html#bundle It’s quite expensive, but the wheel gets excellent reviews and the pedals do too, load cell etc. Fanatec’s website is all over the shop and I honestly don’t trust them any more.

Are you just going to be doing sim racing, or do you need something expandable like the prime? I’m really happy with the Titan, and it’s soooooo much easier to put together than a Prime. Guess it depends how far you want to take it 👍

The Power PC Thread [f*ck off consoles]

Don’t forget power consumption and noise too. 4070 is a lot more efficient than a 3090. The 90 cards are basically just willy waving for most people, unless you’re looking for silly frame rates at 4K and are willing to pay a hefty premium for it, in which case fill your boots :)

I crumbled and upgraded my monitor https://www.dell.com/en-uk/shop/alienware-34-curved-qd-oled-gaming-monitor-aw3423dwf/apd/210-bfrq/monitors-monitor-accessories 25% off currently and I got another 10% off through work. It’s replacing a similar but non-OLED Asus ROG monitor. Arrives today...

The 'I work in I.T' thread

I'm not sure how funny it is, but this was so sweet. I work in support, but a few of my jobs have also involved some toolset coding or bug fixing. I was looking at a major issue for a customer and writing a fix for the problem. They'd changed something upstream which "shouldn't have any impact"...

    Robocop - Rogue City

Despite what I said earlier, I played through it again in the mode which leaves you with all the upgrades you had when finished the last game. So much more fun. Skipped all the dialogue, wondered around like a tank, still some situations where you'd get pasted if you were stupid. Honestly all...

    PC Chilling (laser project)

It depends on the pump, you’d need to check the specific AIO. That said, you can pick up manually controlled 12v PWM signal generators for less than a tenner on eBay, or Noctua do one for about £20 if you want a trusted brand.
  27. charltjr

    PC Chilling (laser project)

Yep, something along those lines should do the job just fine. You can now get air coolers which can handle 300W loads too, but they’ll be on their limit. A decent water cooling loop should handle that load with headroom to spare. Really it depends what your future plans are, if you think you...

    PC Chilling (laser project)

Yes, there should be plenty of options, the main potential difficulty is in mounting the cooler to what you want to cool and getting good thermal contact. Is it something which could be immersed in water? Or something non-conducive like mineral oil?

Sim Rigs - Let’s see yours

That’s really interesting, thanks for the feedback. I was hoping for way more plug and play than that, a bit of tweaking is fine but not tons of messing around. Maybe that’s a benefit of Fanatec, is their compatibility a bit more mature?
