    Calling suspension/handling gurus!!

I kept the back higher than the front as I wanted more progressive on the limit handling. Although my car does understeer, it doesnt snap in the way my old Clio did (-40mm at the front, -85mm at the back). I wanted to keep the emphasis of grip on the front this time and so far its been OK. Id...

    Calling suspension/handling gurus!!

I was gently blasting down a Westcountry A-road the other day when it opened up for a short bit of overtaking opportunity. Amongst the cars I overtook was a Citoen Xsara coupe, which refused to believe that a Clio could have passed it and proceeded to stick to my rear bumper after the straight...

    Favorite & Most hated tyres!

If youve got the original wheels, then Id get a set of four 195/50/15 tyres and ditch the 185/50/15. I found that the prices for 195/50 tyres were typically 50% lower than the same tyre in 185/55 size. 195/50 is a very common size, so you also get more choice - and the rolling radius is...

    Cup Brakes

Do the Cups have larger front discs/pads than the standard 172? Thats what I heard?

    AUDI A4 1.8T - Bye Bye

I had one of these in front of me today on a dual carriageway in Bristol. He pulled out in front of me and no doubt thought his "turbo" would pull well off into the distance. But it didnt and I flew past when he finally moved aside. The look on his face was, as usual, priceless. Why dont...

    Favorite & Most hated tyres!

Ive used Yoko A539s for the past three sets of tyres...but thats got a lot to do with them being cheap rather than being the absolute best!

Someone pinch me i think i’m dreaming!

;) Looks like a fine example matey: glad you found one without big wheels (owners ask more and theyre hard on suspension/bearings) and would be very happy with the miles if the bils are there. Enjoy it, but be ready for the bills in a year or two: there are loads of cars with 60-70k miles on...

T-reg Elise, thankyou very much indeed...

Ben - didnt you see my paper in the Journal of the Institute of Full-on Bullsh*t? Vol.13, no.4, p.227-300024 (2003).

T-reg Elise, thankyou very much indeed...

I find that too - the more my car is cared for, the faster it goes...and 16vs dont come much cleaner than mine!;)

    GOT A VALVER............WOOHOO

I wouldnt say either is faster than the other as a generalisation. But I reckon the 16v and VTS/106 GTi are very well matched. The Valver wins on top end, overtaling and looks though.

    R19 vs 16v

My 1995 Renault brochure quotes 1000kg for the Clio 16v, and I seem to remember that earlier ones were quoted as 975 and 980kg respectively for the Phase1 and early Phase2. The later Phase2 (i.e. the one that weighs 1000kg) had side impact bars, an airbag and more soundproofing than either the...

Proper race in the running-in turbo

Proper race...in a Clio 16v Turbo???? What!!?? I was expecting that youd slain something worthwhile!

    R19 vs 16v

The Phase2 19 16v got side impact bars, better sound proofing, more options etc.

    Engine change

If you are going to do an engine conversion on an RT, stick with a GT Turbo lump and make sure you upgrade the handling/suspension. If you managed to put a 16v lump in there then youd have a car that had the straight-line pace of the 16v but without any of the other benefits of the 16v - at...

    16v wheels

I went from big wheels back to some refurbished Phase2s (with a 195/50 tyre profile choice). The car looks far better now and is much more comfortable/tractable on the limit. The 15" wheels that came on the 16v are fairly big for a car of that size and age, so they dont look too small...

    anybody using optimax

I guess thats possible if the fuel lines and injectors are shagged, but the "Optimax effect" would in that case be no better than using some Redex now and again and would tail off after a few tanks??

    R19 vs 16v

...and the small matter of 150kg extra weight on the 19 16vs behalf!! Doh!
