Yes the emissions light will (probably) illuminate on the dash. Little can be done to get round this bar taking the dash apart to remove the LED in question.
Yeah I know what you mean, with all the structural metalwork there's very little room to work!
Maybe also take off the passenger side door card too (a pain I know) but providing that one's working fine just compare the two and make sure everything is the same?
The interior handle will always open the door from the inside, that's a safety feature.
As you've siad it sounds like you've knocked/dislodged something to do with the locking mechanism on the drivers door.
Take the door card off again and check everything looks correct.
Yeah mine's the same Ben, it also stops glowing if you sit in the car and let the relays 'time out' (I think it's 15 minutes) You hear a click and the glow, goes!

The ultrasonic unit is up behind the courtesy light afaik Ben.
The diode needs to be on the return leg of the cable that links the U/S unit and courtesy light as outlined in the drawing above.
