this might not be an option but have you tried linux? (namely ubuntu) being as you just do web browsing and word processing you can download a live cd (or even a usb version) and try it out without making any changes to the pc (but will run slower off cd)

just to anyone who was looking i've got a Nas pc (it's a single core celeron 2.0 ghz cpu with 1 GB of ram) i copied a 2.5GB file from my laptop and the slowest speed it showed was 62MB/sec (wired to gigabit switch which then goes to dlink router which Nas Pc is pluged into)

i don't think it will be any quicker tbh it might have slightly more power at the spark but thats about it
