Ok. Mr @NorthloopCup furnished me with one of his lovely rebuilds so starting the process of getting that in.
New clutch in and have noticed that pedal is still creaking ruling out the clutch/release bearing etc so it simply has to be the clutch cable but I just cannot budget for that right now...
Wow. I am so unfit......lol
Finally got the box out. Clutch looks fine but will be replaced. Strange wear on springs......normal?
I gather it makes sense to throw in a clutch cable at this stage as well?
What about this flywheel? Not looking perfection nor a track car but in days gone by...
Right guys......currently weighing up what I would be up against to swap this box by taking a shiney refurbished item from mr @NorthloopCup. Financial decision mainly atm but i am just trying to get everything straight in my head.
I have limited room to work (have to work out how to get it up...
If it is like the 172 engine, that will be one of those mass damper crank pulleys that separate the core and outer with rubber
This perishes and the inner and outer spin separately and can sometimes squeal.....worst case is the outer will come off and everything under the bonnet will become...
Yeah, this was it. video
There is no play in the arb, joints, top mounts, rack ends, rack bushes
I also had a little look (briefly) at the inner tripod of the shaft and i see no damage or missing pin bearings etc and the outer certainly feels tight
One query.
I was of the opinion that the 182 style diff setup was supposed to be more robust than the 172........is this a normal failure as far as you guys are concerned?
@NorthloopCup when you build these, do you use this 4 bolt system or do you use the renfort plate with more bolts?
I...
So just to confirm. Will I be able to visibly see if the circlip has shat itself or is there a quick test to prove so?
Can I try and shunt the shaft in or anything to knock the diff and see if it picks up drive again
This would also help me get it in the garage as I cannot do work on it where...
Thanks for that @Brigsy
I am all for trying the in-situ repair but firstly need to get the car up an incline into a garage
Quick question.
Say I drop the gearbox oil and pull the shaft. Is the circlip something that i could temp replace to all new to drive it up a drive
Would it also be...
I take it that it will be quite obvious if the circlip has gone?
If i can get away with an in car repair then a punt at the 50 quid would be worth it imo. There really aren't many boxes around and most certainly, non that I can find in Northern Ireland.
Will have to learn how to tap and get...
Right, so...........no drive in any gear actually. Not sure why it was crunching into 4th and 5th.
Can get it into all with no drive but can hear distinct whirring in 4th and 5th
1, 2 and 3 all go into gear really easy with no noise at all
Reverse will crunch but pushing the clutch in gets...
i havent buddy................i just got the car back to the house.
Couldnt happen at a worse time as we have just so much family stuff going on its unreal. These things come in threes eh?
:/
Eugh, so about to pull out of junction to leave the girls to school and bang......no drive.
Got the car to a safer place (albeit abandoned) and a neighbour kindly brought the girls for me
So sitting in the car trying to work out what has happened. I don't see any oil or bits of metal anywhere...
