Well seeing as how you had a 306 Rallye and now have a Clio Cup to replace it, you will be a very good person to ask how much slower a Rallye is in real life...
I agree about bigger wheels too, they can really alter a cars performance and handling...
Only moved from the...
The 172 is not much faster than the Rallye to 100...
High 17s/low 18s in the mk1 and high 18s in the mk2, vs low 19s in the 306, so maybe a second in it tops!
Now all cars are different and all drivers are different, so there is no way every car will be bang on those stats, every time. The...

My Rallye aint slow...
Ask the driver of the silver mk1 172 on Sunday evening coming past Bury! ;)
Not everyone wants to keep accelerating at full pace and reach silly speeds though. Some people will gun it up to a point then back off.
A Rallye is 0-60 in 6.9secs and 0-100 in...
Some systems can be quite loud, but either a Magnex or a Scorpion is good for power gains and not as noisy as others Ive heard.
I know people that have (or had) exhausts on their VTSs & 106 GTis and some can either be a bit raspy or others quite boomy.
The Scorpion was nice actually, a bit...

But a lot of great cars were considered "dangerous" in their time...
The Porsche 911 was notorious in the 80s and the AC Cobra killed loads of people, but they are still hailed as superb cars and now classics.
Yup, very similar cars, but the VTS has a slight weight advantage and marginally altered gearing, but in real life theres b*gger all in it on the road...
Reading the article in full...
They do mention that the 172 they tested in this article, was different in both character & pace to the one they first test drove on France when they were launched. They went on to say it wasnt quite the fireball they first thought it was!
Me thinks they got a...
It is definately for a silver mk1 172, Ive just dug it out and it was the edition of AutoCar from 3 May 2000.
There was a group test with the mk1 172 & 106 Gti, plus a 306 GTi-6, a Seat Leon 20V T, a Fiesta Zetec-S (which got smoked) and a Proton GTi.
From the pics though, it was wet when...
That is my pic Craggy... ;)
It is a Group test (there were other cars too) in a back issue of AutoCar I have and those are the times they got for a 106 GTi and a mk1 172, so I scanned and cropped it.
Must be 2 years ago I scanned that in.
Everyone I know of that has had work done by LAD has not had the power they claimed when measured on a different rolling road...
Ask on the Pug and/or Saxo forums about the conversino for the 1.6 16v 106 GTi & Saxo VTS engine, which is quite a popular LAD one and theyll tell you the real truth.
I meant he wouldnt play ball for the ton plus race, which would be more intersting...
You are fookin good at launching, so not really as fair, as its driver based.
But if you were both rolling and you both planted it, then wed get a good idea of the cars performance, rather than having...
Totally agree...
A guy at work has an RS and everyone stops and stares at the thing.
It looks superb, very aggressive, but not as in your face as it could have been with no silly big wings (Cossie stylee) or owt daft like that. Nice.
But the interior is a little on the crap side. :cry...
We will never know if the car was or wasnt overboosting, but it would explain it...
But there are so many things that can affect the times.
They should really only be used as a guide, as we all know that in real life cars do vary in performacne and other factors such as driver skill, tyres...
Depends on the road...
Only a crap road surface full of ruts & potholes would make the RS a handful due to the diff, but it would still be in front!
You have an RS and a Cup side by side, both at a given speed, in a given gear, then see what happens if they both accelerate...
The RS...
The voice of reason...
I also love the 172 and am still considering getting a Cup (why did I buy a new feckin house?!), but the Clio is not unbeatable.
Well, if the Evo times are "bullsh!t", then why do they have the Cup down as 1/4 mile in 15.2secs @ 94mph?!
This is an article where they actually tested the cars back-to-back at Millbrook and were all done on the same day, at the same time, in the same way...
Surely this is a more accurate...
They are VERY quick and a Clio, even a Cup, WOULD get toasted!!!
Focus RS:
Power - 212bhp @ 5500rpm
Torque - 229lb/ft @ 3500rpm
0-60 - 5.9secs
0-100 - 14.9secs
1/4 Mile - 14.6secs @ 99mph
Midrange performance is even more impressive.
He was either running it in, not trying, or both!
But if you have access to such equipment through work... ;)
My mate has access to this stuff and he tested it in his old Evo VI to see how accurate the speedo was. Turns out it as pretty bl00dy accurate too and was only reading about a couple of mph fast when it was doing 140mph.
Numpty...
A pic of the speedo and a GPS unit together is good proof... ;)
But it is impossible for a 106 GTi to do 150mph unless the gearing is changed or the rev limit raised!
Not got time tonight. :(
Make sure you get those pics posted visceral, then I can see what went on.
If its a regular thing, Ill have to come another time...
